How Multi-Rate 100/1000 BiDi SFPs Work on a Single Fiber
Many internet service providers run mixed-speed access networks during phased upgrades. Aggregation switches have moved to Gigabit Ethernet, but a meaningful share of customer CPE (media converters, residential gateways, legacy industrial routers) still terminates at 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet. Replacing every CPE in lockstep with the upgrade is rarely practical, so the access fiber has to carry both speeds during the transition.
A single-fiber multi-rate BiDi SFP fits this scenario. One module family covers both line rates on the same single-strand SMF link, letting the ISP commission new 1G subscribers and keep existing 100M subscribers on the same aggregation port without re-cabling or stocking two SFP SKUs.
How single-fiber BiDi works
A BiDi SFP carries transmit and receive on different optical wavelengths over a single fiber strand. A passive WDM diplexer inside the module separates the two directions: one wavelength leaves the laser, the other arrives from the far end and is filtered onto the receiver. The IEEE-defined pair (1000BASE-BX10, IEEE 802.3ah Clause 58) uses 1310 nm and 1490 nm at 10 km on single-mode fiber. Each end transmits and receives on different wavelengths, so the two modules must be a complementary pair. Two identical Side A modules on the same link will not come up: both ends transmit the same wavelength and neither receiver sees what it expects.
What multi-rate actually means
A multi-rate 100/1000 Mbps BiDi SFP supports both 100BASE-FX framing (125 Mbaud, 4B5B NRZI) and 1000BASE-X framing (1250 Mbaud, 8B/10B NRZ) on the same optical front end. The diplexer is rate-agnostic. The laser and receiver are sized for the wider 1.25 Gbaud bandwidth, and the receiver sensitivity envelope covers both 100M and 1G signal levels. Per SFF-8472 convention, the EEPROM advertises the higher nominal rate (byte 12 set for 1.25 Gb/s); actual line-rate selection happens at the host port.
Multi-rate operation is not defined in any IEEE 802.3 standard. There is no IEEE 100BASE-BX equivalent of 1000BASE-BX10. Multi-rate BiDi is a module-level MSA implementation that combines a dual-rate optical PHY with a BiDi diplexer. For the link to actually run at 100 Mbps, the host switch port must support dual-rate SFP operation (auto-negotiation across both speeds or manual config). Standards: what is and isn't IEEE 802.3
IEEE 802.3ah Clause 58 (Ethernet in the First Mile, 2004) defines 1000BASE-BX10 only: the 1310/1490 nm pair at 10 km on single-strand SMF. Extended wavelength pairs, extended reaches, and the 100M/1G multi-rate combination are not IEEE 802.3 compliance. They are SFP MSA implementations governed by SFF-8472 (DOM/EEPROM), SFF-8079 (application select), and per-vendor product specifications. Treat IEEE 802.3ah as the floor; validate every extended spec against the specific product datasheet.
DOM and DDM telemetry on a BiDi module typically reports the module's own transmit wavelength in the identifier fields, while the receive wavelength is set by the diplexer filter rather than a DOM register.
