50GBASE-ER SFP56 Transceiver Description
Our EDGEOPTIC 50G-SFP56-40 is multi-vendor compatible 50GBASE-ER SFP56 dual-fiber optical module designed for 50 Gigabit Ethernet applications operating over single-mode fiber cabling. The 50G-SFP56-40 module operates at 1310nm wavelength for transmission and reception, utilizing PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level) modulation to achieve 53.125 Gbps data rates while supporting multi-rate operation including 10G Ethernet (10.31Gbps) and 25G Ethernet (25.78Gbps). Our 50GBASE-ER SFP56 transceiver delivers reliable extended-reach connectivity for long-haul metropolitan and regional network deployments.
The transceiver utilizes EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser) technology for transmission and APD (Avalanche Photodiode) for receiving. This advanced optical configuration ensures a 17 dB guaranteed link budget, optimized for single-mode fiber applications requiring maximum reach capabilities. Over standard single-mode fiber, the transceiver reliably achieves 40 kilometers transmission distance, making it suitable for metropolitan area networks, carrier backhaul, and inter-data center connectivity. However, distance is just indicative parameter calculated for comfort of identification – eventually we calculate distance taking in account minimal optical budget and average attenuation of optical cabling in industry.
50G-SFP56-40 compatible 50GBASE-ER module is hot-pluggable SFP56 with duplex LC/UPC connectors as an optical interface. The electrical interface conforms to SFP56 MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specifications and SFF-8472 standards, ensuring compatibility with standard SFP56 host systems supporting multiple vendor equipment platforms. Our 50GBASE-ER SFP56 transceiver can be encoded to be compatible and successfully operate in different 80+ brands of equipment. The module incorporates host-based Forward Error Correction (FEC) support and integrated CDR (Clock and Data Recovery) functionality, critical for maintaining signal integrity in PAM4 modulated systems over extended distances.
The module features comprehensive DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) functionality providing real-time information including transmitted and received optical power levels, module temperature, bias current, and supply voltage. This diagnostic data are available via MSA-compatible EEPROM interface and enables monitoring of transceiver operational parameters. Operating within a 0 to 70°C temperature range with 3W maximum power consumption, the module maintains stable performance across diverse deployment environments from climate-controlled facilities to edge network locations.
Standards compliance includes IEEE 802.3cd for 50 Gigabit Ethernet, along with SFP56 MSA and SFF-8431 specifications. The enhanced optical design featuring APD receiver technology provides superior sensitivity at -17.6 dBm, enabling reliable long-distance transmission while maintaining industry-standard interoperability. The multi-rate capability accommodates legacy 10 Gigabit and 25 Gigabit Ethernet operation alongside native 50 Gigabit rates, providing exceptional flexibility for mixed-speed network deployments. Our 50G SFP56 ER transceiver is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with Class 1 FDA and IEC60825-1 laser safety standards.
Typical applications are metropolitan area network backbones, carrier-class transport networks, inter-data center interconnects, and regional network infrastructure requiring 50G bandwidth over extended distances. The combination of PAM4 modulation technology with EML laser and APD receiver architecture enables cost-effective deployment of 50G connectivity for long-haul applications while maximizing existing single-mode fiber infrastructure investments. Because our focus is providing top quality service, we are performing serious quality checks before delivery of our products. As a result, we do optical parameter measurements, connector cleanness tests and SFP56 transceiver EEPROM memory data validation tests.
