NOKIA (Alcatel) compatible SFP-10G-LR Description

The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 is a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver coded for Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent) SFP-10G-LR compatibility. It operates at 1310nm over single-mode fiber with a 10km reach and a duplex LC/UPC interface. The module is EEPROM coded for SR OS platforms.

Transmit side uses a 1310nm DFB laser with a PIN photodiode receiver. Link budget is 6dB over G.652 single-mode fiber. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding per IEEE 802.3ae.

Compatible with Nokia 7750 SR series routers, 7705 SAR, 7250 IXR, and 7210 SAS platforms with SFP+ ports. The module is EEPROM coded for SR OS and recognized without workarounds. Check transceiver status through “show port [port-id] detail” in SR OS.

SFP-10G-LR is Nokia’s product designator for its 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver, following the common vendor naming convention for this interface type. The same module is also ordered under the Nokia-internal code 3HE04823AA. Older documentation may reference it under the Alcatel-Lucent brand. Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent in 2016; both Nokia and ALU-branded equipment accept this module.

DDM (SFF-8472) supported for real-time optical and electrical monitoring. MSA compliant (SFF-8431, IEEE 802.3ae). Class 1 laser safety (IEC 60825-1). CE and RoHS certified, commercial temperature 0°C to 70°C.

Operates over G.652 single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2 compliant). On short patch runs, an inline attenuator may be needed to keep received power below the overload threshold.

G.652 single-mode fiber has an attenuation of approximately 0.35 dB/km at 1310nm. Over a 10km span, fiber loss consumes about 3.5 dB of the optical power budget. Connector insertion loss runs 0.5 dB per mated UPC pair; fusion splices add 0.1 dB each. A 10km link with two connector pairs and a few splices consumes roughly 4.5–5 dB, leaving 1–1.5 dB of margin against the 6 dB budget.

10GBASE-LR covers enterprise and campus backbones, inter-building links, metro access and aggregation rings, carrier backhaul, and dark-fiber DCI. The 10km reach is sufficient for most metro and enterprise applications without moving to longer-reach ER or ZR optics. For spans near the 10km limit, measure installed attenuation with an OTDR or optical loss meter before commissioning.

LC connector endfaces should be inspected and cleaned before every mate. Contaminated or scratched connectors are a common cause of link degradation at 10G rates: a single particle larger than the mode field diameter can add several dB of loss. Use IEC 61300-3-35 visual inspection grading and dry or wet cleaning methods before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nokia SFP-10G-LR the same as the Alcatel-Lucent SFP-10G-LR?

Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent in 2016, and the SFP-10G-LR designation carried over unchanged. The 3HE04823AA ordering code from the ALU era refers to the same 10GBASE-LR SFP+ specification.
