100G QSFP28 Active Optical Cable with DDM (0.5-100m) Description
Our EdgeOptic 100G-AOC-QSFP is a multi-vendor compatible 100G QSFP28 active optical cable designed for high-performance 100 Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand applications that need reach beyond copper cable limits. The 100G-AOC-QSFP uses a point-to-point configuration with QSFP28 connectors on both ends and embedded fiber optic technology to deliver reliable high-bandwidth connectivity up to 100 meters for data center interconnects, campus backbones, and inter-row connections in hyperscale environments.
The cable supports data rates from 96.97 to 112.2 Gbps, accommodating the bandwidth requirements of next-generation data center architectures. For Ethernet deployments, the cable handles 100G Ethernet at 103.125 Gbps, supporting spine-leaf topologies and high-performance server connectivity. It also supports InfiniBand EDR at 100 Gbps for high-performance computing clusters, machine learning training infrastructure, and distributed storage systems where low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnects are essential.
The 100G-AOC-QSFP operates at 850nm wavelength, using VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology for transmission and a PIN photodiode for reception. The embedded multimode fiber supports distances up to 50 meters over OM3 fiber and up to 100 meters over OM4 fiber, giving deployment flexibility based on available infrastructure. Because the optical fiber is permanently terminated within the cable assembly, there are no exposed fiber connectors to clean or protect, which simplifies installation and reduces maintenance compared to traditional patch cables with separate transceivers.
The cable advertises FEC capability to the host through its EEPROM, so host-side FEC can be enabled at the switch port where the deployment calls for it. Because it transmits over optical fiber rather than copper, the link is immune to electromagnetic interference, which suits environments with significant electrical noise. Its lightweight, flexible construction eases cable routing in congested pathways and improves airflow compared to copper bundles, which is particularly valuable in high-density 100G deployments.
The cable operates from a +3.3V single power supply with a maximum power consumption of 3.5W. The electrical and management interface conforms to the QSFP28 MSA, including the SFF-8636 and SFF-8665 specifications, ensuring broad compatibility with standard QSFP28 host systems from multiple equipment vendors. Our 100G QSFP28 AOC cables can be encoded for compatibility with a wide range of equipment brands.
The cable incorporates DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring), providing real-time diagnostic data including transmitted and received optical power, module temperature, bias current, and supply voltage through the MSA-compatible interface. It operates within a 0 to 70°C temperature range and carries an MTBF rating of 1,000,000 hours.
Our 100G QSFP28 active optical cable is CE and RoHS certified and compliant with product safety standards. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms and a lifetime warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 100G-AOC-QSFP work on InfiniBand EDR ports or only Ethernet?
Yes. The 100G-AOC-QSFP supports both 100G Ethernet (103.125 Gbps) and InfiniBand EDR (100 Gbps), so it runs on EDR fabric ports as well as standard 100GbE QSFP28 ports. That makes it suitable for HPC and AI/ML fabrics built on EDR InfiniBand switches, not only Ethernet spine-leaf networks. Check your switch documentation for the correct port mode when connecting an InfiniBand EDR or 100GbE host.
Does the 100G-AOC-QSFP break out to 4x25G SFP28?
No. It is a straight point-to-point QSFP28-to-QSFP28 active optical cable that carries a single 100G link end to end. Connecting a 100G QSFP28 port to four 25G SFP28 ports requires a breakout AOC, which is a different cable assembly. Confirm your topology before ordering, since a straight 100G AOC cannot serve a breakout application.
Can the 100G-AOC-QSFP be coded for different vendors at each end?
Yes. An active optical cable carries vendor identification at both ends, so a link between two different switch brands needs the correct coding on each connector. EdgeOptic can supply the 100G-AOC-QSFP dual-coded, for example one end coded for Arista and the other for Cisco, on request. Specify the coding for each end when you order, or contact our sales team to confirm the combination for your equipment.
