Arista compatible QSFP-100G-LR Description
QSFP-100G-LR is Arista’s part number for a single-lambda 100G QSFP28 transceiver based on PAM4 modulation. Unlike the four-wavelength 100GBASE-LR4 (which uses 4x25G NRZ on four LAN WDM lanes), the QSFP-100G-LR transmits 100G on a single lane at 1304.5–1317.5 nm using PAM4 encoding per IEEE 802.3cu 100GBASE-LR. EdgeOptic’s compatible replacement is built on our 100G-QSFP28-SL10 platform and ships with Arista-recognized EEPROM coding.
The single-lambda architecture simplifies the optical path: one laser wavelength, one modulated signal, no internal WDM multiplexer/demultiplexer. The PAM4 encoding maps two bits per symbol, doubling the spectral efficiency compared to NRZ. The trade-off is that PAM4 signaling requires forward error correction (FEC) at the host interface to maintain acceptable bit error rates. Arista platforms supporting the QSFP-100G-LR provide RS-FEC (KP4, per IEEE 802.3cu) on the host-side SerDes. Maximum reach is 10 km over G.652 single-mode fiber through duplex LC/UPC connectors. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C.
The 7050X3, 7050X4, 7280R3, and 7500R3 series have the required PAM4-capable SerDes for single-lambda 100G operation. Earlier Arista platforms (7050X, 7050X2, 7280R, 7280R2) use NRZ-only SerDes and cannot drive single-lambda 100G modules. Verify the target line card’s SerDes generation before ordering. EdgeOptic codes the QSFP-100G-LR compatible with Arista-recognized EEPROM, so EOS identifies the module as a supported transceiver. DDM telemetry (Tx/Rx optical power, temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current) reports through “show interfaces transceiver” and SNMP MIBs. Because the module uses a single lambda, DDM reports one Tx and one Rx power value rather than the four per-lane values seen on LR4 modules.
Don’t confuse the QSFP-100G-LR with the QSFP-100G-LR4 or QSFP-100G-LRL4. Those are Arista’s four-wavelength NRZ-based 100GBASE-LR4 modules, which do not require host-side FEC and work on older Arista platforms. The QSFP-100G-LR requires RS-FEC (KP4) on the host port; connecting it to a port without KP4 FEC support will result in link failure. Both ends of the link must run single-lambda PAM4; mixing a single-lambda LR with a four-wavelength LR4 on opposite fiber ends will not establish a connection.
EdgeOptic backs this compatible with a lifetime warranty and CE/RoHS certification. For Arista PAM4 deployment questions or volume pricing on the 100G-QSFP28-SL10 platform, contact our sales team
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Arista QSFP-100G-LR and QSFP-100G-LR4?
The QSFP-100G-LR is a single-lambda module using PAM4 modulation per IEEE 802.3cu. The QSFP-100G-LR4 uses four LAN WDM wavelengths with 25G NRZ modulation per IEEE 802.3ba. Both reach 10 km on single-mode fiber, but the single-lambda LR requires host RS-FEC (KP4) while the LR4 does not. The two are not interoperable on opposite ends of a fiber link.
Which Arista platforms support the single-lambda QSFP-100G-LR?
The QSFP-100G-LR requires PAM4-capable SerDes on the host port. Arista platforms with this support include the 7050X3, 7050X4, 7280R3, and 7500R3 series. Earlier platforms (7050X, 7050X2, 7280R, 7280R2) use NRZ-only SerDes and cannot drive single-lambda 100G modules.
Does the QSFP-100G-LR require FEC on the host switch?
Yes. PAM4 modulation at 100G requires RS-FEC (KP4, IEEE 802.3cu) on the host port. Without KP4 FEC enabled, the link will not establish. Arista’s PAM4-capable platforms enable RS-FEC by default on ports configured for single-lambda 100G operation.
