Aruba compatible JL743A Description

JL743A is Aruba's part number for a 100GBASE-ER4 Lite QSFP28 transceiver, qualified for the Aruba CX 8360 and CX 9300 switch families. EdgeOptic's compatible replacement is built on our 100G-QSFP28-40 platform, matching the original optical and electrical specifications. The module reaches 40 km over standard G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC/UPC connectors.

Aruba (an HPE company) uses the JL-prefix ordering scheme for CX-platform optics. JL743A specifically targets 40 km 100G links on the CX 8360-12C, CX 8360-16Y2C, CX 9300-32D, and CX 9300-48Y6C. These platforms serve campus core, data center leaf/spine, and metro backbone roles where extended-reach 100G is required between buildings or sites. The CX platform runs AOS-CX, which validates transceiver vendor identifiers at insertion time. EdgeOptic's compatible is coded with Aruba-recognized EEPROM data, so AOS-CX reports it as a verified module in 'show interface transceiver' output without requiring 'allow-unsupported-transceiver' configuration.

The optical interface follows the ER4 Lite specification: four 25G NRZ lanes on LAN WDM wavelengths (1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, 1309.14 nm), transmitted and received through duplex LC/UPC connectors over single-mode fiber. Four EML transmitters generate the modulated optical signals; four PIN photodiodes on the receive side recover them. Minimum launch power per lane is approximately -2.9 dBm, with receiver sensitivity around -20.9 dBm under FEC assistance. The host-side FEC engine in the CX 8360/9300 ASIC handles error correction to close the 40 km link budget without external amplification.

DDM telemetry (Tx/Rx optical power per lane, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage) is accessible through AOS-CX CLI and the REST API v10.x endpoint. Aruba Central also pulls DDM data for centrally managed CX switches, enabling remote monitoring of optical link health across distributed campus or metro backbone deployments. AOS-CX exposes these values via SNMP as well, for integration with third-party NMS platforms.

The JL743A serves the same optical role as Cisco's QSFP-100G-ER4L-S, Juniper's QSFP-100G-ER4L, and Arista's QSFP-100G-ERL4, but with Aruba-specific EEPROM coding. Don't install an Aruba-coded module in a non-Aruba switch or vice versa, as the host will reject the vendor ID mismatch. Don't confuse JL743A with JL742A, which is Aruba's 10 km LR4 QSFP28 using a different optical budget. For CX 8360/9300 deployment projects or volume pricing, contact our sales team

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Aruba switches support the JL743A?

The JL743A is supported on Aruba CX 8325-32C, 8325-48Y8C (firmware AOS-CX 10.04.0030 or later), Aruba 8360 series, and Aruba CX 10000. It is limited to specific port positions and a maximum of four modules per switch due to thermal constraints. The 8400X does not support ER4L optics. Check the Aruba Transceiver Guide for your model's port mapping.

What is the Cisco or Arista equivalent of the JL743A?

The Cisco equivalent is QSFP-100G-ER4L-S and the Arista equivalent is QSFP-100G-ERL4. All three are 100GBASE-ER4 Lite QSFP28 modules with the comparable wavelengths, link budget, and reach. They are interoperable on the same fiber link.

Why is the JL743A limited to specific ports on the Aruba 8325?

The JL743A consumes up to 4.5 W, which is higher than standard LR4 optics (3.5 W). Aruba restricts ER4 Lite modules to ports with adequate thermal headroom to prevent overheating. On the 8325-32C, use ports 29-32. On the 8325-48Y8C, use ports 49, 51, 53, or 55.

Does the JL743A require FEC for 40 km reach?

Yes. Without host FEC, the module reaches approximately 30 km. With FEC enabled on the Aruba switch, reach extends to 40 km. Configure FEC at the interface level in ArubaOS-CX and ensure the remote end matches.
