SCMD-4A: Configurable 4-Channel Single Fiber CWDM Mux/Demux

SCMD-4A is EDGE's manufactured 4-channel single fiber CWDM mux/demux module built to ITU-T G.694.2 with 20 nm channel spacing. As a BiDi design, it carries 4 duplex data streams over 8 CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber, using CCWDM free-space filter technology, and requires no electrical power or active cooling. SCMD-4A ships as a configurable build. Buyers select one of three wavelength bands (1271 to 1411 nm, 1391 to 1531 nm or 1471 to 1611 nm), one of three housings (mini-LGX, LGX or 19-inch 1U), and can add an optional 1310 nm monitor port. An EXP expansion port is included on every build. As a passive device, SCMD-4A adds no signal processing and is transparent to the protocol carried on each stream, so it fits standard CWDM deployments regardless of the protocol used.

4 Data Channels Single Fiber Passive CWDM Mux/Demux Description

SCMD-4A is EDGE's manufactured 4-channel single fiber passive CWDM mux/demux module, built to ITU-T G.694.2 with 20 nm channel spacing. As a BiDi design, it carries 4 duplex data streams over 8 CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber, using CCWDM free-space filter technology to combine the wavelengths at one end and separate them at the far end.

SCMD-4A is a configurable build. Buyers choose one of three wavelength bands (1271 to 1411 nm, 1391 to 1531 nm, or 1471 to 1611 nm) and one of three housings (mini-LGX, LGX, or 19-inch 1U). An optional 1310 nm monitor port can be added, and an EXP expansion port is included on every build.

As a passive device, SCMD-4A needs no electrical power and no active cooling, and it does not process the signal on any stream. Each stream stays transparent to the protocol it carries, so the module fits standard CWDM links without adding latency or a power dependency.

CWDM mux/demux modules are deployed in matched Side A and Side B pairs so that channel positions mirror correctly across the link. A fixed SCMD-4B counterpart exists for the 1471 to 1611 nm band. For the 1271 to 1411 nm and 1391 to 1531 nm bands, confirm whether a matching Side B build is available before specifying a paired link.

The optional 1310 nm monitor port adds a 1 percent tap with 23 dB insertion loss for in-service optical power checks. It is not required for a working link and ships only when selected in the configurator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the wavelength bands on each end of a CWDM link do not match?

Each end of a CWDM link must use the same wavelength band and channel plan so the wavelengths sent from one end are the wavelengths the mux/demux at the other end is built to pass. If the bands do not match, the channels will not align and the link will not carry signal correctly. Confirm the wavelength band before ordering both ends of a link.

Does the transceiver wavelength need to match the SCMD-4A band exactly?

Each SCMD-4A band covers eight ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM wavelengths, spaced 20 nm apart, carrying four duplex data streams. The transceiver installed on a given channel must be coded to the specific wavelength that channel is built to pass. Verify the exact channel wavelength against the transceiver datasheet before assigning it to a port on the selected band.

Does SCMD-4A require a matching Side B unit at the far end of the link?

CWDM mux/demux modules are generally deployed in matched Side A and Side B pairs so channel positions mirror correctly end to end. A fixed SCMD-4B counterpart is currently available for the 1471 to 1611 nm band. For the 1271 to 1411 nm and 1391 to 1531 nm bands, confirm with EDGE whether a matching Side B build exists before specifying a paired link.

Is the 1310 nm monitor port required?

No. The 1310 nm monitor port is an optional configurator add-on that provides a 1 percent tap with 23 dB insertion loss, allowing in-service optical power checks without breaking the live channels. It is not required for a working mux/demux link and ships only when selected during configuration.
