Ciena compatible 160-9401-900 Description

EdgeOptic's 160-9401-900 compatible is a Ciena-coded 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 transceiver built on our 100G-QSFP28-10 platform. 160-9401-900 is the Ciena part number for the 100G Ethernet QSFP28 module on Ciena 6500 and Waveserver Ai client ports. EdgeOptic's compatible carries Ciena-specific EEPROM coding, so the port reports certified (Ena) status in Ciena SAOS rather than the UCTF (uncertified) classification SAOS applies to uncoded modules. This module is 100G Ethernet only, for OTU4 or 128G Fibre Channel client traffic, the multi-rate Ciena 160-9402-900 is the correct SKU.

The module operates over a duplex single-mode fiber pair using LAN WDM. Four optical channels at 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, and 1309.14 nm are multiplexed inside the module. The transmitter uses cooled EML lasers; the receiver uses a PIN ROSA. Each channel runs at 25.78125 Gbps NRZ for an aggregate line rate of 103.125 Gbps. Optical link budget is 6.3 dB per IEEE 802.3ba, supporting up to 10 km over G.652 single-mode fiber. Per-lane transmit power is -4.3 dBm to +4.5 dBm; per-lane receiver sensitivity is -10.6 dBm pre-FEC. The dual LC/UPC connector accepts standard SMF patch cords.

DDM/DOM per QSFP28 MSA (SFF-8636) reports per-lane TX and RX optical power, laser bias current, module temperature, and supply voltage. The module conforms to the QSFP28 MSA (SFF-8665) and IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4. It is Class 1 laser safe per IEC 60825-1, CE and RoHS certified, with a commercial operating temperature of 0 to 70 C and typical power consumption of 3.5 W within the QSFP28 Class 4 cage budget (4.5 W maximum). The module has no internal FEC engine and is transparent to host-side RS-FEC where the host platform enables it for 100GbE operation.

160-9401-900 is supported on Ciena platforms with QSFP28 client ports configured for 100GbE-only operation, including the Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform on applicable 100G client line cards and the Waveserver Ai with QSFP28 client ports. Per-line-card support varies, confirm the specific line card and Ciena software release before deployment. Note that the 100GbE-only line cards in the 6500 family differ from the multi-rate cards used for the 160-9402-900, the two SKUs target different card types.

The module ships CE/RoHS certified and complies with QSFP28 MSA SFF-8665 and IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For project-quantity pricing or alternative vendor coding, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Ciena 160-9401-900 and 160-9402-900?

The 160-9401-900 is 100G Ethernet only. The 160-9402-900 is multi-rate and supports 100G Ethernet, OTU4 (111.81 Gbps per ITU-T G.709), and 128G Fibre Channel (FC-PI-7, 128 Gbps). Both share the same optical interface: 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28, LAN WDM, 10 km over G.652 single-mode fiber, LC duplex connector. Use the 160-9401-900 for 100GbE client ports; use the 160-9402-900 when the line card carries OTU4 or 128GFC client traffic. The two SKUs are not interchangeable in Ciena ordering systems and target different 6500 line card families.

Which Ciena platforms support 160-9401-900?

Verified Ciena platforms include the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform on applicable 100G client line cards, and the Waveserver Ai on QSFP28 client ports. The 160-9401-900 targets 100GbE-only line cards, which differ from the multi-rate cards used for the 160-9402-900. Per-line-card support and minimum software release vary, confirm against the Ciena hardware compatibility documentation for the specific platform release.

Does the compatible 160-9401-900 work natively on Ciena equipment?

Yes. EdgeOptic codes the module with Ciena-specific EEPROM identification. The port registers as certified (Ena) status in Ciena SAOS, the same classification a Ciena-branded transceiver receives. Uncoded modules typically show UCTF (uncertified) status in SAOS, which still passes traffic unless the platform is configured to reject UCTF. Proper Ciena coding removes the uncertified warnings and ensures clean platform integration without policy adjustments.

Can the 160-9401-900 be used for OTU4 or Fibre Channel transport?

No. The 160-9401-900 is specified for 100G Ethernet client traffic only and does not support OTU4 (111.81 Gbps per ITU-T G.709) or 128G Fibre Channel (FC-PI-7) operation. Ciena's multi-rate variant covers those client interfaces and is built for the line cards that carry OTN or Fibre Channel client traffic. Ordering the wrong SKU for an OTU4 or 128GFC application results in a module that the line card will not accept for the intended client rate.
