Ciena compatible 160-9401-900 Description
160-9401-900 is the Ciena part number for a 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 transceiver. The EdgeOptic 100G-QSFP28-10 is a compatible replacement with EEPROM coded for Ciena platform recognition (Ena status in SAOS). It operates over duplex single-mode fiber at four LAN WDM wavelengths (1295.56–1309.14nm per LR4 lane plan) with a 10km reach.
The module uses cooled EML transmitters and PIN ROSA receivers, carrying four 25.78125 Gbps NRZ lanes (103.125 Gbps aggregate). Optical link budget is 6.3dB over G.652 single-mode fiber per IEEE 802.3ba. This module is 100G Ethernet only. For OTU4 or 128GFC, see the 160-9402-900.
Compatible with Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform (on applicable 100G client line cards) and Waveserver Ai with QSFP28 client ports. The Ciena EEPROM coding gives the port certified (Ena) status in SAOS. Uncoded modules show UCTF (uncertified) status but still pass traffic unless configured otherwise.
DDM/DOM per QSFP28 MSA (SFF-8636) reports per-lane TX and RX optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage. Compliant with QSFP28 MSA (SFF-8665) and IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4. Class 1 laser safe (IEC 60825-1), CE/RoHS certified, commercial temperature 0–70°C, 3.5W max power.
Operates over G.652 single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2 compliant) using duplex LC connectors.
100GBASE-LR4 uses LAN WDM to multiplex four 25 Gbps NRZ lanes onto a single fiber pair, with each lane at a discrete wavelength (1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, 1309.14nm). An internal optical mux combines the four transmitter outputs onto one fiber, and an internal demux separates the four received wavelengths at the far end. No external WDM filter is required. The module drops into 100G client ports over 10km single-mode fiber.
LR4 is used for data center spine-leaf uplinks, 100G client links into coherent DCI transponders, metro aggregation, and enterprise/carrier 100G backbones. The 6.3 dB channel insertion loss budget per IEEE 802.3ba supports approximately 10km over G.652 single-mode fiber with typical installed attenuation of 0.35 dB/km at 1310nm, leaving roughly 2 dB margin for connectors and splices.
QSFP28 modules require thermal consideration at rack-scale density. Maximum power consumption of 3.5W per port adds up fast across 32- or 64-port line cards, and insufficient airflow can push case temperatures toward DDM warning thresholds. Monitor supply voltage, bias current, and case temperature through the host NMS or CLI DDM queries.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Ciena 160-9401-900 and 160-9402-900?
The 160-9401-900 is a 100GbE-only module. The 160-9402-900 additionally supports OTU4 and 128GFC applications. Both are 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 modules with 10km reach over single-mode fiber. Choose the 160-9401-900 if you only need Ethernet.
Which Ciena platforms support 160-9401-900?
The 160-9401-900 is used on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform (on applicable 100G client cards) and Waveserver Ai. Any Ciena platform with QSFP28 client ports that lists 160-9401-900 in its supported optics table can use this module.
Does the compatible 160-9401-900 work natively on Ciena equipment?
The module is programmed with Ciena-specific EEPROM coding and registers as certified (Ena status) on Ciena SAOS platforms. Verify compatibility with your specific software release.
