Ciena compatible QSFP28-LR4 Description
EdgeOptic's Ciena QSFP28-LR4 compatible is a Ciena-coded 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 transceiver built on our 100G-QSFP28-10 platform. QSFP28-LR4 is Ciena's generic ordering code for the LR4 module on Ciena platforms, and EdgeOptic's compatible carries Ciena-recognised EEPROM data programmed against this code. Ciena uses additional ordering codes for platform-specific variants of the same optical module (XCVR-Q10V31 for the 6500 and Waveserver platform line, and 160-9401-900 / 160-9402-900 for other platform variants). Those are sold and indexed as separate EdgeOptic SKUs; this page covers the QSFP28-LR4 ordering code specifically.
The optical path uses LAN WDM with four channels at 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, and 1309.14 nm, multiplexed within the 1310 nm window onto a single duplex LC fiber pair. Each channel carries 25.78125 Gbps NRZ for an aggregate 103.125 Gbps line rate. The transmitter uses an EML array; the receiver uses a PIN photodiode array. Optical path loss budget is 6.3 dB per IEEE 802.3ba Clause 88, supporting up to 10 km over OS2 (G.652.D) single-mode fiber. Reach in the field depends on actual fiber attenuation and connector loss.
Digital optical monitoring (DDM/DOM) reports transmit and receive optical power, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage through the SFF-8636 management interface. The module has no internal FEC; it is transparent to host-side RS-FEC (IEEE 802.3bj Clause 91) running in the Ciena platform ASIC. Host electrical interface is CAUI-4 (4x25G NRZ per IEEE 802.3bj Clause 83). Operating temperature is 0 to 70 °C. Power draw is typical 3.5 W; QSFP28 Class 4 cage budget is 4.5 W maximum per SFF-8665.
The module ships CE/RoHS certified and complies with QSFP28 MSA SFF-8665 and IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For project-quantity pricing or alternative vendor coding, contact our sales team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Ciena QSFP28-LR4, XCVR-Q10V31, and 160-9401-900?
All three are Ciena ordering codes for 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 modules at 10 km, but Ciena uses different codes for different platform contexts and platforms typically enforce EEPROM identification against the expected part number. QSFP28-LR4 (this page) is the generic Ciena ordering code. XCVR-Q10V31 is the platform code typically listed for Ciena 6500 and Waveserver-series chassis and has its own EdgeOptic page. 160-9401-900 and 160-9402-900 are platform-specific Ciena ordering codes for other 6500/8700 line cards, each with its own EdgeOptic page. Match the ordering code to the one your Ciena chassis transceiver table actually lists, then order the corresponding EdgeOptic page.
Which Ciena platforms support QSFP28-LR4?
QSFP28-LR4 is the generic Ciena ordering code; only Ciena platforms whose chassis transceiver table lists QSFP28-LR4 as the supported part will accept it. Ciena 6500 and Waveserver chassis typically list XCVR-Q10V31 instead, and other 6500 line cards or 8700-series chassis list 160-94xx-900 numbered codes. Always check the transceiver table for the specific line card and SR OS / SAOS release, then order the EdgeOptic page that matches the listed ordering code.
Does the compatible QSFP28-LR4 work natively on Ciena equipment?
Yes. EdgeOptic codes the EEPROM with Ciena-recognised data for QSFP28-LR4, so Ciena platforms identify the module as a vendor-supported transceiver. No CLI override or third-party-optic configuration is required.
Is QSFP28-LR4 the same as a generic 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 module?
Optically the modules are aligned to the same IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4 specification, but QSFP28-LR4 as a Ciena ordering code carries Ciena-specific EEPROM identification. EdgeOptic's compatible on this page is Ciena-coded. If you need an MSA-generic compatible without vendor-specific EEPROM, the EdgeOptic 100G-QSFP28-10 root product is the right page; if you need a different vendor coding, contact sales.
