Ciena compatible XCVR-S10V31 Description
The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 directly replaces the Ciena XCVR-S10V31 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver. It operates at 1310nm over single-mode fiber with a 10km reach and a duplex LC/UPC interface. The module is Ciena EEPROM coded, so it registers as certified (Ena status) on SAOS platforms.
Transmit side is a 1310nm DFB laser with a PIN photodiode receiver. Link budget is 6dB over G.652 single-mode fiber. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding per IEEE 802.3ae.
Compatible with Ciena 3930, 5142, 5160, 5170, 5171, 6500, and 8700 platforms with SFP+ ports. The Ciena EEPROM coding ensures the port shows certified status in SAOS. Uncoded modules show UCTF (uncertified) status but still pass traffic unless the platform has been configured to block uncertified transceivers. Run “port xcvr show” on SAOS 8.x and later to verify transceiver status and DDM readings.
The XCVR-S10V31 naming follows Ciena’s XCVR product line convention for SFP+ transceivers. This module may also be referenced under legacy Nortel-era part numbers from before the Ciena acquisition in 2010 — verify any cross-referenced part number against the myCiena portal before ordering.
Supports DDM (SFF-8472) for real-time optical and electrical monitoring. The module meets SFF-8431 electrical and IEEE 802.3ae optical MSA requirements, with Class 1 laser safety (IEC 60825-1), CE marking, and RoHS compliance. Commercial temperature range is 0°C to 70°C.
Operates over G.652 single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2 compliant). On short patch runs, check that received power stays within the receiver’s overload threshold (–1dBm per IEEE 802.3ae). Use an inline attenuator if needed.
G.652 single-mode fiber has an attenuation of approximately 0.35 dB/km at 1310nm. Over a 10km span, fiber loss consumes about 3.5 dB of the optical power budget. Connector insertion loss runs 0.5 dB per mated UPC pair; fusion splices add 0.1 dB each. A 10km link with two connector pairs and a few splices consumes roughly 4.5–5 dB, leaving 1–1.5 dB of margin against the 6 dB budget.
10GBASE-LR covers enterprise and campus backbones, inter-building links, metro access and aggregation rings, carrier backhaul, and dark-fiber DCI. The 10km reach is sufficient for most metro and enterprise applications without moving to longer-reach ER or ZR optics. For spans near the 10km limit, measure installed attenuation with an OTDR or optical loss meter before commissioning.
LC connector endfaces should be inspected and cleaned before every mate. Contaminated or scratched connectors are a common cause of link degradation at 10G rates: a single particle larger than the mode field diameter can add several dB of loss. Use IEC 61300-3-35 visual inspection grading and dry or wet cleaning methods before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do third-party SFP+ optics work in Ciena switches?
Ciena does not hard-lock third-party optics. Uncoded modules show UCTF (uncertified) status in SAOS but still pass traffic. Compatible modules with Ciena EEPROM coding register as Ena (enabled/certified) and suppress the UCTF alarm.
Which Ciena platforms support the XCVR-S10V31?
The XCVR-S10V31 fits Ciena platforms with SFP+ ports: 3930, 5142, 5160, 5170, 5171, 6500, and 8700. Check the myCiena portal for your specific platform and software version.
