Cisco compatible QSFP-40GE-LR4 Description
EdgeOptic's QSFP-40GE-LR4 compatible is a Cisco-coded version of the EdgeOptic 40G-QSFP-10 multi-vendor 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver. It ships with Cisco-recognized EEPROM, so IOS XE and NX-OS accept it as a native 40G QSFP+ optic without the 'service unsupported-transceiver' command.
The module follows the 40GBASE-LR4 standard, IEEE 802.3ba Clause 87. Four CWDM lanes at 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm multiplex onto one LC duplex single-mode pair, reaching 10 km over G.652 OS2 fiber with a 6.6 dB link budget. A DFB laser drives each lane at −6 to +3 dBm; the PIN receiver holds −12.6 dBm per-lane sensitivity and tolerates up to +3 dBm overload. Operating range is 0 to 70 °C and digital diagnostic monitoring is supported.
The '40GE' designation marks this as the Ethernet-only Cisco SKU, used on platforms that label 40-Gigabit Ethernet ports as 40GE. It works in Cisco platforms with 40GE-designated QSFP+ ports and carries 40 Gigabit Ethernet only, so don't deploy it where OTU3 or other OTN framing is required. Don't confuse it with QSFP-40G-LR4, the multirate Cisco SKU that adds OTU3, or with the QSFP-40G-LR4-S spare PID; they are separate part numbers. Confirm both ends of the link run the same 40GBASE-LR4 lane plan during commissioning.
Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For volume pricing or platform questions, contact our sales team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between QSFP-40GE-LR4 and QSFP-40G-LR4 on Cisco platforms?
QSFP-40GE-LR4 is the Ethernet-only SKU, named for the '40GE' port designation Cisco uses on many platforms. QSFP-40G-LR4 is the multirate SKU that also carries OTU3 for transport applications. Both are 40GBASE-LR4 LC duplex optics over 10 km, but choose QSFP-40GE-LR4 for 40 Gigabit Ethernet ports and QSFP-40G-LR4 when you need the OTU3 rate.
