Cisco compatible DS-SFP-FC8G-ER Description
EdgeOptic's DS-SFP-FC8G-ER compatible is a Cisco-coded 8G Fibre Channel Extended Reach SFP+ transceiver, built on the EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-40 1550 nm 40 km ER platform. It is scoped to the extended-reach Fibre Channel application of that multi-vendor ER platform, delivering 40 km of reach over single-mode fibre for storage links in Cisco MDS 9000 Series SAN switches. The same EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-40 platform is coded for a wide range of vendor part numbers, so a single qualified 1550 nm ER design covers many switch ecosystems.
The module auto-negotiates 2G, 4G and 8G Fibre Channel, so it slots into mixed-speed MDS fabrics alongside 4G FC optics without manual rate configuration. It operates at 1550 nm and connects through a duplex LC/UPC interface over duplex single-mode fibre, carrying the 8 Gbps Fibre Channel signal across the full 40 km extended-reach span. Extended-reach 8G Fibre Channel is used for inter-site SAN connectivity, including data-center-to-data-center storage replication, backup and disaster-recovery links, and SAN extension over single-mode fibre up to 40 km.
Transmit power is rated from −1 to +4 dBm and receiver sensitivity is better than −16 dBm, with a receiver overload point of 0 dBm. That gives a 15 dB link budget for the 40 km path, with margin to absorb connector loss and splice loss across an extended-reach storage link. Digital optical monitoring reports temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, transmit power and receive power, so SAN administrators can read module health directly from the MDS switch and track receive power against the sensitivity threshold. The transceiver runs on a single +3.3 V supply across the 0 to 70 °C commercial temperature range.
The transceiver is built to the SFF-8431 SFP+ electrical interface specification and the SFP MSA mechanical form factor, and carries CE marking, RoHS compliance, and Class 1 laser safety certification under IEC 60825-1. EdgeOptic codes the EEPROM to Cisco specifications, so the MDS 9000 switch identifies the module as a genuine DS-SFP-FC8G-ER.
Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. The DS-SFP-FC8G-ER compatible ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For deployment guidance on a specific MDS fabric, contact our sales team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DS-SFP-FC8G-ER compatible need the service unsupported-transceiver command on a Cisco MDS switch?
No. EdgeOptic codes the EEPROM of its Cisco compatibles to Cisco specifications, so the MDS 9000 switch reads the module as a genuine DS-SFP-FC8G-ER. The transceiver comes up as a recognized optic with no command-line workaround. As a final check before production deployment, verify the module against the Cisco MDS NX-OS compatibility matrix for your switch.
Is the DS-SFP-FC8G-ER 8G only, or does it auto-negotiate to 4G and 2G Fibre Channel?
It auto-negotiates across 2G, 4G and 8G Fibre Channel. The module matches the speed of the MDS port it is plugged into, so it can replace 4G FC optics in an existing fabric or run at full 8 Gbps Fibre Channel on newer line cards without manual rate configuration.
