ONS-SC+-10G-LR Cisco Compatible 10G SFP+ LR Module

ONS-SC+-10G-LR is Cisco’s part number for a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver qualified for the ONS and NCS optical transport platforms. EdgeOptic’s compatible replacement is built on our 10G-SFP-10 platform and coded with the Cisco vendor OUI that ONS/NCS firmware validates during module insertion. The compatible provides identical optical performance to the original Cisco transceiver in all supported transport platform configurations.

The module transmits at 1310 nm using a DFB laser and receives with a PIN photodiode, providing 10 Gbps over up to 10 km of G.652 single-mode fiber through duplex LC/UPC connectors. It complies with IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, SFF-8432, and SFF-8472 (DDM). The link budget supports the standard maximum channel insertion loss of approximately 6.3 dB. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C, and power consumption stays within the SFP+ MSA limit.

The ONS-SC+-10G-LR belongs to Cisco’s optical transport transceiver catalog, which is distinct from the enterprise switching optics catalog. It is designed for the ONS 15454 MSTP/MSPP platform and the NCS 2000 series (NCS 2006, NCS 2015). These are metro and regional optical transport nodes used in service provider and large enterprise WDM networks. The ONS-SC+-10G-LR typically serves as a client-side optic, connecting a 10GbE client port on a transponder or muxponder card to an external Ethernet switch or router. The line-side optic on the same card faces the DWDM ring or mesh network.

Don’t confuse the ONS-SC+-10G-LR with Cisco’s SFP-10G-LR. Although both are 10GBASE-LR modules with the same underlying optical specifications, the ONS variant carries EEPROM coding specific to the ONS/NCS transport platform. Installing an enterprise SFP-10G-LR in an ONS 15454 slot may result in the transponder card rejecting the optic or CTC (Cisco Transport Controller) reporting it as unsupported. The reverse also applies: using an ONS-coded module in a Catalyst or Nexus switch will trigger unsupported-transceiver warnings. Cisco’s transport optics catalog also includes the ONS-SC+-10G-SR for short-reach multimode connections on the same platforms.
