Cisco compatible QSFP-40G-LR4-S Description

EdgeOptic's QSFP-40G-LR4-S compatible is a Cisco-coded Ethernet version of the EdgeOptic 40G-QSFP-10 multi-vendor 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver. It carries Cisco-recognized EEPROM, so Cisco switches read it as a native module and the "service unsupported-transceiver" command is not required on IOS XE or NX-OS.

The module runs four CWDM lanes at 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm, multiplexed onto a single duplex LC over single-mode fiber for reach up to 10 km. A DFB laser drives each lane and a PIN photodiode receives, with per-lane launch power between −6 dBm and +3 dBm and receiver sensitivity of −12.6 dBm per lane. The 6.6 dB link budget covers a standard 10 km G.652 span with margin. Digital optical monitoring reports temperature, supply voltage, bias current, and per-lane optical power.

The Cisco QSFP-40G-LR4-S is the S-class Ethernet variant. It carries 40GBASE-LR4 Ethernet and does not run OTU3 or other OTN rates. If a deployment needs OTU3 multirate transport, the QSFP-40G-LR4 (no -S suffix) is the part to specify, not this one. Don't swap the two part numbers during procurement. The QSFP-40G-LR4-S= ordering code is Cisco's spare PID for the same optic; both forms refer to the same module.

This optic is built to the IEEE 802.3ba Clause 87 40GBASE-LR4 standard and the QSFP+ MSA (SFF-8436, INF-8438i). It operates from 0 to 70 degrees C. For switch-line-card and chassis support, verify the part against the Cisco Transceiver-to-Device Compatibility Matrix for your platform and software release before deployment.

Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For volume pricing or qualification support, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between QSFP-40G-LR4-S and QSFP-40G-LR4?

The QSFP-40G-LR4-S is the Cisco S-class Ethernet variant and carries 40GBASE-LR4 Ethernet only. The QSFP-40G-LR4 (no -S suffix) is the multirate sibling that also supports OTU3. Both share the same optics, four CWDM lanes, 10 km reach, and duplex LC, so for Ethernet-only switching the -S part is the correct order. Specify the non-S part only when a platform line card needs OTU3 transport.

Does the Cisco QSFP-40G-LR4-S compatible need the service unsupported-transceiver command?

No. EdgeOptic codes this compatible with Cisco-recognized EEPROM, so IOS XE and NX-OS accept it as a native optic without the service unsupported-transceiver command. Confirm switch and software-release support against the Cisco Transceiver-to-Device Compatibility Matrix for your platform.
