EdgeOptic's SFP-10G-ER-S compatible is a Cisco-coded version of the EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-40 multi-vendor 10GBASE-ER SFP+ transceiver. Cisco scopes the SFP-10G-ER-S to 10 Gigabit Ethernet only, distinguishing it from the broader SFP-10G-ER which adds Fibre Channel and STM-64 support. Same 40 km 1550 nm reach, same DDM behaviour, narrower protocol envelope. The module registers cleanly on IOS, IOS XE, and NX-OS because the EEPROM identifies as a Cisco part; the service unsupported-transceiver command is not required.

Optical layer is built on a DFB laser transmitter and PIN photodiode receiver at 1550 nm over standard single-mode fiber. Launch power runs from −1 to +4 dBm and receiver sensitivity reaches −16 dBm, delivering a 15 dB link budget across the 40 km reach with 1 dB of margin for connector and patch panel loss. Receiver overload is 0 dBm. The data rate envelope covers 1.25 to 10.3125 Gbps for 10GE and 1GE Ethernet, matching the Ethernet-only application scope of the SFP-10G-ER-S. Fibre Channel and STM-64 protocols are not in scope on this part; for those protocols the non-S SFP-10G-ER variant is the correct order.

Form factor is industry-standard SFP+ per SFF-8431 MSA, with an LC duplex fiber interface and the standard 20-pin SFP host connector. DDM/DOM diagnostics over the SFF-8472 two-wire serial interface report TX power, RX power, laser bias current, module temperature, and supply voltage in real time, readable from show interface transceiver CLI output on Cisco devices or pulled via SNMP for NMS integration. The chromatic dispersion tolerance covers the 800 to 1000 ps/nm range typical of a 40 km G.652 span at 1550 nm. The module is hot-pluggable into any Cisco SFP+ port that accepts the SFP-10G-ER-S ordering code. Supply rail is +3.3 V at standard SFP+ power draw, and the 0 to 70 °C commercial temperature range covers temperature-controlled wiring closets and data center cabinets.
