Cisco compatible SFP-10G-LR Description

The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 is a compatible replacement for the Cisco SFP-10G-LR transceiver module. It supports 10GBASE-LR Ethernet over single-mode fiber at 1310nm with a maximum reach of 10km, using a duplex LC/UPC connector. The module is factory-programmed with Cisco-recognized EEPROM coding and is recognized by all supported Cisco platforms without requiring the "service unsupported-transceiver" command.

The transmitter uses a 1310nm DFB laser with an output power range of –8.2dBm to +0.5dBm. The receiver uses a PIN photodiode with a sensitivity of –14.4dBm at a BER of 10⁻¹², providing a minimum optical power budget of 6.2dB over standard ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber. The operating wavelength range is 1260nm to 1355nm per IEEE 802.3ae. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding.

The SFP-10G-LR is supported on Catalyst switches (including 2960-X, 3560-X, 3650, 3850, 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600 series), Nexus data center switches (3000, 5000, 7000, and 9000 series), ASR routers (1000 and 9000 series), ISR 4000 series routers, Firepower 4100 and 9300 appliances, and Meraki MS switches with SFP+ ports.

Cisco uses several part number variants for the same 10GBASE-LR module. SFP-10G-LR is the base product identifier used in hardware configuration tools. SFP-10G-LR= (with the equals sign) is the separately orderable spare, sold as a standalone replacement unit. Both are optically and functionally identical. The SFP-10G-LR-S is a separate cost-reduced SKU qualified only on Catalyst switching platforms and is not listed for Nexus, ASR, or ISR deployments.

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM) is supported per SFF-8472 Rev 12.4. The module reports transmit and receive optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage in real time. Alarm and warning thresholds are factory-set per Cisco specifications. The module is MSA compliant and classified as Class 1 laser safe per IEC 60825-1. It is CE and RoHS certified with a commercial operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. Typical power consumption is under 1W.

The SFP-10G-LR operates over standard OS2 single-mode fiber plant. The minimum recommended link length is 2 meters to avoid receiver saturation at maximum transmit power; for shorter patch cables, an inline optical attenuator (5–10dB) is recommended. The module uses a bail-clasp latch mechanism and supports hot-swappable insertion in all standard SFP+ and SFP28 cage types, operating at 10G line rate.

All EdgeOptic transceivers ship with a lifetime warranty and are individually tested before shipping. For volume pricing, compatibility verification, or project support, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Cisco IOS versions support the SFP-10G-LR?

On Catalyst 6500 platforms, support dates to IOS 12.2(33)SXI. On IOS XE platforms (Catalyst 3650, 3850, 9000 series, ISR 4000), the SFP-10G-LR is supported across all major releases. Nexus minimum NX-OS versions vary by platform family — refer to Cisco’s transceiver compatibility matrix for the specific version required on your switch. Meraki MS switches with SFP+ ports detect compatible optics automatically on supported models.

How do I verify SFP-10G-LR optical levels after installation?

On IOS XE, run "show interfaces [interface] transceiver" to read DDM values. Confirm TX power is within –8.2 to +0.5dBm and RX power is above –14.4dBm. On NX-OS, use "show interface [interface] transceiver details". On Meraki, optical telemetry is visible on the port detail page in the Dashboard. If RX power is below the sensitivity threshold, check fiber polarity and clean the LC connectors.

What does SFP-10G-LR= mean vs SFP-10G-LR?

The equals sign (=) in Cisco part numbers indicates a separately orderable spare. SFP-10G-LR is the base product ID used in Cisco’s hardware configuration and ordering tools. SFP-10G-LR= is the same module packaged as a standalone spare or replacement. Both share identical optical specifications, EEPROM coding, and platform support.

Can I use SFP-10G-LR in a Catalyst 9300 that lists SFP-10G-LR-S?

Yes. The SFP-10G-LR is qualified on every Catalyst platform where the SFP-10G-LR-S is listed, plus additional platforms like Nexus, ASR, and ISR. The S-Class is a cost-reduced variant, not a technical replacement. Both modules share the same 10GBASE-LR optical parameters and either will work in any Catalyst 9300 SFP+ port.
