Cisco compatible SFP-10G-LR-S Description

The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 is a compatible replacement for the Cisco SFP-10G-LR-S (S-Class) 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver. It supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fiber at 1310nm with a maximum reach of 10km, using a duplex LC/UPC connector. The module is factory-coded with Cisco EEPROM values, so Catalyst switches accept the module without the "service unsupported-transceiver" command.

The transmitter uses a 1310nm DFB laser with an output power range of –8.2dBm to +0.5dBm. The receiver uses a PIN photodiode with a sensitivity of –14.4dBm at BER 1E-12 and a maximum input power of –1dBm. The maximum channel insertion loss is 6.2dB (IEEE 802.3ae Clause 68) over ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber. The operating wavelength range is 1260nm to 1355nm. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding.

The SFP-10G-LR-S is supported on Cisco Catalyst switching platforms with SFP+ ports. Supported series include the Catalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600, as well as legacy Catalyst 3650, 3850, and 3560-X switches. The S-Class designation indicates a cost-optimized SKU with a narrower platform list than the standard SFP-10G-LR. Nexus, ASR, ISR, and Firepower platforms use the standard SFP-10G-LR instead.

Cisco uses the SFP-10G-LR-S= part number (with the equals sign) for the separately orderable spare. SFP-10G-LR-S is the base product identifier in Cisco’s configuration tools, while SFP-10G-LR-S= is the same module sold as a spare. Both are optically and functionally identical.

The module reports TX/RX power, bias current, temperature, and supply voltage through the standard DDM interface (SFF-8472). The module is MSA compliant and classified as Class 1 laser safe per IEC 60825-1. It carries CE and RoHS certification, operates at 0°C to 70°C (commercial temperature), and draws under 1W typical.

The SFP-10G-LR-S operates over standard OS2 single-mode fiber. The minimum recommended link length is 2 meters to avoid receiver saturation; for shorter patch cables, an inline optical attenuator (5–10dB) is recommended. The module uses a bail-clasp latch mechanism and supports hot-swappable insertion in all standard SFP+ cage types.

G.652 single-mode fiber has an attenuation of approximately 0.35 dB/km at 1310nm. Over a 10km span, fiber loss consumes about 3.5 dB of the optical power budget, leaving ~2.5 dB margin once connector and splice losses are accounted for. For spans near the 10km limit, measure installed attenuation with an OTDR before commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Catalyst switches support the SFP-10G-LR-S?

The SFP-10G-LR-S is supported on Catalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600 series, as well as legacy Catalyst 3650, 3850, and 3560-X switches with SFP+ uplink ports. Check Cisco’s transceiver compatibility matrix for your specific Catalyst model and IOS XE version.

What does SFP-10G-LR-S= mean?

The equals sign (=) in Cisco part numbers indicates a separately orderable spare. SFP-10G-LR-S is the base product ID in Cisco’s hardware configuration tools. SFP-10G-LR-S= is the same module packaged as a replacement spare. Both share identical optical specifications, EEPROM coding, and platform support.

Can I use SFP-10G-LR-S in a Nexus switch?

The SFP-10G-LR-S is not supported on Nexus platforms. Cisco’s Nexus 3000, 5000, 7000, and 9000 series use the SFP-10G-LR instead. Both modules are optically identical, but the EEPROM coding differs. For Nexus deployments, use the EdgeOptic Cisco SFP-10G-LR compatible.

How do I verify SFP-10G-LR-S optical levels on IOS XE?

Run "show interfaces [interface] transceiver" on IOS XE to read DDM values. Verify TX power is within –8.2 to +0.5dBm and RX power is between –14.4dBm and –1dBm. RX power below –14.4dBm indicates excessive fiber loss; RX power above –1dBm risks receiver saturation on a very short link.
