Extreme compatible 10338 Description

EdgeOptic's Extreme Networks 10338 compatible is an Extreme-coded 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ transceiver for EXOS X-Series switches. EdgeOptic programs the module EEPROM with Extreme-recognised vendor identity so EXOS accepts the transceiver under its standard module validation. The part is intended as a drop-in alternative to the native Extreme 10338 on equipment that carries the OEM SKU in its EXOS hardware compatibility documentation. This page covers the standard commercial-temperature 10338; the industrial-temperature 10338-I is a distinct Extreme SKU and is not the same part.

The transceiver operates per IEEE 802.3an for 10GBASE-T, IEEE 802.3bz for 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, and IEEE 802.3ab for 1000BASE-T fallback. Reach is up to 30 m on Cat6a or Cat7 unshielded twisted-pair. The electrical and management interfaces follow SFF-8431 and SFF-8432, which are the governing MSAs for SFP+ class copper modules. Operating temperature covers 0 to 65 °C commercial grade, with CE and RoHS certification. The module draws more power than a fibre SFP+ and requires a high-power SFP+ cage, which the EXOS G2 platforms support on their 10G SFP+ ports.

Because the 10338 is a copper module, DOM telemetry is scoped to the fields that apply to a non-optical SFP+: case temperature, supply voltage, and link status. There is no laser, so transmit optical power, receive optical power, and laser bias current do not exist on this part and are not reported. Management tooling that expects optical DDM values should be configured to treat this module as a copper transceiver.

Target deployment is the EXOS X-Series G2 family, including X440-G2, X450-G2, X460-G2, X620, X670-G2 and X690 switches. A critical deployment note applies to the 10338 across this family: Extreme's guidance is to populate 10338 modules in every other SFP+ port on the switch, with the adjacent port left vacant or occupied by a lower-power optical module. The constraint is thermal, not firmware; 10GBASE-T copper modules dissipate more heat than optical SFP+ at the same data rate, and airflow across the cage stack must remain within the chassis design envelope. Engineers planning high-density 10338 deployments should review Extreme's published port-population guidance for the specific switch model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Extreme 10338 populate every SFP+ port on X670-G2 and X690 switches, or is port spacing required?

Extreme's guidance for the EXOS G2 family is to populate 10338 modules in every other SFP+ port, with the adjacent port left vacant or occupied by a lower-power optical SFP+. The constraint applies to X440-G2, X450-G2, X460-G2, X620, X670-G2 and X690 and is thermal, not firmware. 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ modules dissipate more heat per port than optical SFP+ at the same data rate, and EXOS chassis airflow budgets must stay within the chassis design. Verify Extreme's current port-population guidance for the specific switch model before committing to a full copper population plan.

Is the 10338 the same part as the 10338-I, or are the commercial and industrial temperature variants different SKUs?

The 10338 and the 10338-I are distinct Extreme Networks ordering codes. The 10338 is the standard commercial-temperature 10GBASE-T SFP+ for EXOS switches, with a 0 to 65 °C operating window under EdgeOptic's compatible specification. The 10338-I is the industrial-temperature extended-range variant covering approximately -40 °C to +85 °C, intended for operating environments outside the commercial envelope. This page is the standard 10338; deployments that specify the -I suffix in hardware guidance require the industrial SKU and should not use this compatible.
