Extreme compatible MGBIC-BX10-D Description

EdgeOptic's MGBIC-BX10-D compatible is an Extreme Networks-coded version of the EdgeOptic BiDi-1.25G-SFP-21-BD multi-vendor 1000BASE-BX BiDi SFP transceiver. It transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm over a single strand of single-mode fiber through an LC connector, conforming to IEEE 802.3ah 1000BASE-BX10. The module pairs with an MGBIC-BX10-U unit at the far end of the link, matching Extreme Networks' own BiDi pairing scheme.

EdgeOptic's compatible is built to a 20 km reach with a 15 dB optical link budget. It uses a DFB laser and PIN photodiode, with transmit power from −9 to 3 dBm, receiver sensitivity of −22 dBm and an overload point of −3 dBm. Transmit and receive passbands each span 40 nm, centered at 1470 to 1510 nm and 1290 to 1330 nm, with chromatic dispersion tolerance of 430 to 500 ps/nm. Operating temperature runs 0 to 70°C on a 3.3 V supply, and digital diagnostics monitoring follows SFF-8472.

The module meets CE and RoHS requirements and Class 1 laser safety per FDA and IEC 60825-1, and the physical form factor follows the INF-8074i SFP multi-source agreement. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms, this compatible carries EdgeOptic's lifetime warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Extreme MGBIC-BX10-D need to be paired with an MGBIC-BX10-U module?

Yes. Extreme Networks' own installation guide for 1000BASE-BX bidirectional SFP modules documents the MGBIC-BX10-D as a 1490 nm transmit, 1310 nm receive optic that pairs with an MGBIC-BX10-U module carrying the complementary 1310 nm transmit, 1490 nm receive wavelengths at the far end of the link. A matched -D and -U pair is required for the link to establish. EdgeOptic sells the -U side as a separate compatible module.

The OEM Extreme MGBIC-BX10-D is rated for 10 km. Why is EdgeOptic's compatible rated for 20 km, 15 dB?

Extreme Networks' own installation guide documents the MGBIC-BX10-D at a 10 km maximum transmission distance with an 8 dB link power budget when paired with an MGBIC-BX10-U module. EdgeOptic's compatible is built on the BiDi-1.25G-SFP-21-BD design, EdgeOptic's own 20 km, 15 dB optical build. These are two different optical designs from two different sources; the original Extreme part is not rated to reach 20 km.

Will my Extreme switch accept a third-party MGBIC-BX10-D compatible module?

Extreme Networks' third-party transceiver policy does not block third-party optics outright, but Extreme does not guarantee that third-party modules operate correctly, recommends Extreme-branded optics, and is not liable for issues caused by third-party transceivers. Check the Extreme Optics Compatibility website for switch-specific guidance before ordering.
