F5 Networks compatible F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R Description
The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 is a compatible replacement for the F5 Networks F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver. It provides 10 Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fiber at 1310nm, reaching up to 10 km with a duplex LC connector. The module is coded with F5-recognized EEPROM data for BIG-IP hardware appliances.
The transceiver has a 1310nm DFB laser transmitter and PIN photodiode receiver. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding per IEEE 802.3ae. The module has a 6 dB guaranteed optical link budget over G.652 single-mode fiber. Dual-rate operation at 1G Ethernet (1.25 Gbps, 1000BASE-LX) is supported on host ports that enable rate negotiation. Operating temperature range is 0 to 70°C commercial.
F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R fits F5 BIG-IP hardware appliances with SFP+ ports, including the BIG-IP iSeries (i5800, i7800, i10800, i11800, i15800) and BIG-IP rSeries r5000, r10000, and r12000 series platforms. The rSeries r2000 and r4000 models are equipped with SFP28 (25G) ports and do not accept SFP+ modules. VIPRION blades with SFP+ ports (B2100, B2150, B2250) installed in VIPRION 2400, 4480, or 4800 chassis also accept this optic.
F5 sells optics separately from BIG-IP hardware under the F5-UPG prefix. BIG-IP appliances can be ordered with SFP+ ports empty and populated with F5-UPG optics later as specific links are deployed.
F5 BIG-IP checks installed optics against an internal compatibility list at module insertion and link-up events. Non-F5 optics generate log entries flagging the module as unsupported, though the link still passes traffic. The EdgeOptic compatible F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R is coded with F5-recognized EEPROM identifiers so BIG-IP reports it with F5 vendor and part number fields instead of flagging it.
G.652 single-mode fiber has a maximum attenuation of 0.4 dB/km at 1310nm per ITU-T G.652.D. Over a 10 km span, fiber loss consumes up to 4 dB of the 6 dB channel budget. Connector loss runs 0.1 to 0.3 dB per mated LC UPC pair. Inspect LC endfaces per IEC 61300-3-35 before mating.
DDM per SFF-8472 reports TX/RX optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage. The module is MSA compliant per SFF-8431 (electrical) and IEEE 802.3ae (optical), with Class 1 laser safety per IEC 60825-1. CE and RoHS certified for commercial temperature range 0°C to 70°C. Power consumption is under 1 W.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does F5 block third-party SFP+ optics?
F5 BIG-IP appliances validate optics at module insertion against an internal compatibility list. Non-F5 modules trigger unsupported optic warnings in the BIG-IP logs but still pass traffic. F5-coded compatible modules like the EdgeOptic F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R are recognized as F5-branded optics and do not trigger these warnings.
How do I verify the F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R is recognized on my BIG-IP?
Run tmsh show sys hardware from the BIG-IP CLI to list installed optics with their EEPROM data. A recognized F5-coded optic appears with "F5 Networks" in the Vendor field and the F5 part number in the Part Number field. If a module reports as unsupported, check /var/log/ltm for optic validation messages.
What is the difference between F5 iSeries and rSeries BIG-IP platforms?
F5 iSeries (introduced 2016) is the established BIG-IP hardware line. F5 rSeries (launched 2022) is the next-generation platform built on F5OS, which runs BIG-IP as isolated software tenants on shared hardware. Both generations include models with SFP+ ports that accept the F5-UPG-SFP+LR-R; rSeries r2000 and r4000 use SFP28 (25G) ports instead and are not compatible.
