F5 Networks compatible F5-UPG-VEL-QSFP28-SRBD Description

EdgeOptic's F5-UPG-VEL-QSFP28-SRBD compatible is an F5-coded dual-rate 40G/100G SR-BiDi version of the EdgeOptic multi-vendor 100G BiDi transceiver, ordering-coded for F5 VELOS chassis deployments. The VEL designation marks F5's VELOS Field Upgrade code for the BX110 and BX520 blades in the VELOS CX110 chassis, where the module runs at both 40G and 100G in QSFP28 ports. The same EdgeOptic hardware backs multiple vendor codes across the catalog, with each platform served by its own ordering code.

The module transmits over two multimode fibers using bidirectional wavelength division: 850 nm on one strand and 900 nm on the other, with a 2x50G PAM4 line. Receive is wideband across 832 to 918 nm. It uses a VCSEL transmitter and a PIN photodiode receiver, terminating in a duplex LC/UPC connector. SR-BiDi runs the same module at both ends; the duplex LC pair simply crosses transmit and receive between the two ends, so there is no separate far-end variant to order. Reach is 70 m on OM3, 100 m on OM4, and 150 m on OM5, based on an average optical link budget of 1.9 dB.

Carried traffic is Ethernet only: 100G Ethernet (103.125 Gbps) and 40G Ethernet (41.25 Gbps). The module supports host-side FEC and DOM diagnostics, runs on +3.3 V at up to 3.5 W, and operates across the 0 to 70 C standard temperature range. The CAUI-4 host electrical interface follows IEEE 802.3bm; the SR-BiDi optical link itself follows the vendor and MSA specification rather than an IEEE optical standard. On the VELOS BX110 and BX520 blades both 40G and 100G are available, while F5 QSFP+ ports on i-series platforms run this module at 40G only. EdgeOptic codes the EEPROM so the module works on these F5 platforms; verify against the F5 VELOS transceiver compatibility table for your blade configuration.

Don't confuse the VEL code with F5-UPG-QSFP28-SRBD, the non-VEL ordering code F5 assigns to its rSeries appliances. The two are optically identical, but the field naming routes each to its platform family, so order the VEL code for VELOS deployments. The module is CE and RoHS certified and built to the QSFP28 MSA. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Made to order with a 2-week lead time and a lifetime warranty included. Frequently Asked Questions

What does the VEL designation mean in F5-UPG-VEL-QSFP28-SRBD, and which F5 platform does it belong to?

VEL stands for VELOS, F5's modular chassis platform. F5 lists F5-UPG-VEL-QSFP28-SRBD as the VELOS Field Upgrade code for the BX110 and BX520 blades in the VELOS CX110 chassis. The non-VEL sibling, F5-UPG-QSFP28-SRBD, is the same optic ordered for F5 rSeries appliances. Both share F5's internal OPT-0060-xx code and are optically identical, so the difference is the platform ordering lane rather than the hardware.

Can F5-UPG-VEL-QSFP28-SRBD run on rSeries appliances, or is it only for VELOS?

F5's field naming assigns the VEL code to VELOS BX110 and BX520 blades and the non-VEL F5-UPG-QSFP28-SRBD code to rSeries appliances, even though both are the same module. For an rSeries deployment the non-VEL code is the matching ordering lane. Verify against the F5 transceiver compatibility table for your platform model before ordering, and order the code that matches your chassis.
