Fortinet compatible FG-TRAN-QSFP28-LR4 100G QSFP28 Module

FG-TRAN-QSFP28-LR4 is Fortinet’s part number for a 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 transceiver, used in FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms equipped with QSFP28 ports. EdgeOptic’s compatible replacement is built on our 100G-QSFP28-10 platform and ships with Fortinet-recognized EEPROM coding. The module provides a direct functional replacement for Fortinet’s original optic in high-throughput security and network switching infrastructure.

The 100GBASE-LR4 specification uses four LAN WDM channels at 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, and 1309.14 nm, each carrying 25G NRZ modulation for an aggregate data rate of 103.1 Gbps. The optical interface is duplex LC/UPC on G.652 single-mode fiber with a maximum reach of 10 km per IEEE 802.3ba. The module conforms to the QSFP28 MSA for mechanical and electrical interfaces and supports DDM reporting for real-time monitoring of per-lane Tx/Rx optical power, module temperature, supply voltage, and laser bias current. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C.

Fortinet uses the FG-TRAN prefix for FortiGate-qualified transceivers and the FS-TRAN prefix for FortiSwitch-qualified optics. The FG-TRAN-QSFP28-LR4 is referenced in Fortinet’s transceiver compatibility guide for the FortiGate 3400E, 3600E, 3700F, 3800F, 4200F, 4400F, and 7000 series chassis (including the 7030E and 7040E blades with QSFP28 network processor interfaces). FortiSwitch platforms with QSFP28 uplink ports, such as the FS-1048E and FS-3032E, also accept this optic under the equivalent FS-TRAN ordering code. The same physical module works across both FortiGate and FortiSwitch when coded with the appropriate Fortinet EEPROM profile.

In Fortinet deployments, the QSFP28 LR4 optic typically connects FortiGate firewalls to the data center core or aggregation switches over single-mode fiber runs between buildings or across campus. The 10 km reach provides sufficient distance for most enterprise and service provider environments where the firewall sits at the data center perimeter or in a colocation facility connected to the main campus via dark fiber. FortiOS reports transceiver status and DDM values through the CLI (“FortiOS CLI diagnostic commands” command) and in the FortiGate GUI under Network > Interfaces. centralized management through FortiManager also aggregates transceiver health data across multiple FortiGate chassis in a Security Fabric deployment, simplifying optic health monitoring at scale.
