Fortinet compatible FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR Description
EdgeOptic's FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR compatible is a Fortinet-coded 25GBASE-SR SFP28 transceiver engineered for unified use across current-generation FortiGate firewalls and FortiSwitch platforms with 25G SFP28 ports. FN-TRAN is Fortinet's current unified transceiver SKU for FortiGate and FortiSwitch, replacing the older FortiGate-specific FG-TRAN and FortiSwitch-specific FS-TRAN part number families.
Optical specs: 850 nm VCSEL transmitter, PIN photodiode receiver, TX power -8.4 to +2.4 dBm, RX sensitivity better than -10.3 dBm, 5.3 dB link budget. Reach is 100 m on OM4, 100 m on OM5, and 70 m on OM3 with an LC/UPC duplex connector. The module is IEEE 802.3by Clause 112 compliant with RS-FEC via Clause 91 (RS(528,514)) when negotiated by the host port.
Electrical interface follows SFF-8431 and SFF-8432 for the SFP28 cage. Digital diagnostics are SFF-8472 compliant and read back through FortiOS 'diagnose hardware deviceinfo transceiver' and FortiSwitchOS 'diagnose switch modules details' for per-port temperature, supply voltage, TX bias, TX power, and RX power visibility. Power dissipation is 0.3 W and the module operates across 0-70 C.
Fortinet does not require a CLI override for third-party transceivers on FortiOS or FortiSwitchOS, but the module must present correct EEPROM coding to be accepted at link-up. EdgeOptic programs the FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR with Fortinet-recognized EEPROM, so the module is accepted on FortiGate firewalls with 25G SFP28 ports and on FortiSwitch models with 25G SFP28 uplinks without raising 'unsupported SFP' events on syslog. The consolidated FN-TRAN identity means the same module can be spared across both the FortiGate and FortiSwitch fleet.
For the older FG-TRAN-SFP28-SR part on legacy FortiGate firmware, EdgeOptic maintains a separate product page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR work on both FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms?
Yes. FN-TRAN is Fortinet's current unified transceiver SKU, consolidating the older FortiGate-specific FG-TRAN and FortiSwitch-specific FS-TRAN part numbers into a single module. The FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR operates on FortiGate firewalls with 25G SFP28 ports and on FortiSwitch platforms with 25G SFP28 uplinks using the same module.
Does FortiOS require vendor-original transceivers, or do compatible modules work?
FortiOS and FortiSwitchOS do not require a CLI override to accept third-party transceivers, but the module must present correct Fortinet-recognized EEPROM coding. EdgeOptic's FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR is programmed with Fortinet identification, so the module is accepted at link-up and does not raise 'unsupported SFP' events on syslog.
Which FortiGate and FortiSwitch models support the FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR?
Fortinet maintains a FortiSwitch Compatible Transceivers document and per-platform hardware specifications for FortiGate 25G SFP28 ports. Refer to Fortinet's compatibility documentation for the current per-model and per-FortiOS-release qualification status. EdgeOptic tests the FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR against Fortinet reference platforms before shipment.
How is the FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR different from the older FG-TRAN-SFP28-SR?
FG-TRAN-SFP28-SR is the legacy Fortinet SKU that predates the unified line and was specific to FortiGate firewalls. FN-TRAN-SFP28-SR is the current unified SKU that replaced FG-TRAN and FS-TRAN, operating across both FortiGate and FortiSwitch. For the FG-TRAN-SFP28-SR specifically, EdgeOptic maintains a separate product page.
