Fortinet compatible FN-TRAN-SFP+GC Description

EdgeOptic's Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+GC compatible is a Fortinet-coded 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ transceiver for FortiGate firewalls. The FN- prefix identifies this part as the FortiGate product family SKU; the sibling FS-TRAN-SFP+GC covers the FortiSwitch product family and is coded for that ecosystem instead. Engineers ordering for FortiGate SFP+ cages should request the FN- variant on this page; FortiSwitch deployments belong on the FS-TRAN-SFP+GC compatible page. EdgeOptic programs the module EEPROM with Fortinet-recognised vendor identity for FortiGate hosts.

The transceiver operates per IEEE 802.3an for 10GBASE-T, IEEE 802.3bz for 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, and IEEE 802.3ab for 1000BASE-T fallback. Reach is up to 30 m on Cat6a or Cat7 unshielded twisted-pair. The electrical and management interfaces follow SFF-8431 and SFF-8432, which are the governing MSAs for SFP+ class copper modules. Operating temperature covers 0 to 65 °C commercial grade, with CE and RoHS certification. The module draws more power than a fibre SFP+ and requires a high-power SFP+ cage, which FortiGate SFP+ cages on the supported platforms meet.

Because the FN-TRAN-SFP+GC is a copper module, DOM telemetry is scoped to the fields that apply to a non-optical SFP+: case temperature, supply voltage, and link status. There is no laser, so transmit optical power, receive optical power, and laser bias current do not exist on this part and are not reported. Management tooling that expects optical DDM values should be configured to treat this module as a copper transceiver.

Target deployment is the FortiGate firewall product family, including FortiGate 1000F, 2000E, 3000E, 3500F and FortiGate-6000 series chassis. FortiGate-6000 support for FN-TRAN-SFP+GC was added in FortiOS 6.0.6 per Fortinet's release notes; earlier FortiOS revisions on that platform should be upgraded before deployment. FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer appliances that expose 10G SFP+ cages may also accept the module, but engineers should verify the specific appliance against Fortinet's published hardware compatibility documentation before populating cages in those management platforms. This part is not the FortiSwitch variant; for FortiSwitch chassis, use the FS-TRAN-SFP+GC compatible instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which FortiOS version first supported the FN-TRAN-SFP+GC on FortiGate-6000 series chassis?

Fortinet's FortiGate-6000 release notes added FN-TRAN-SFP+GC support in FortiOS 6.0.6; FortiGate-6000 chassis running earlier FortiOS revisions should be upgraded to 6.0.6 or later before deploying the transceiver. For FortiGate 1000F, 2000E, 3000E and 3500F, there is no comparable release-note version gate documented; verify the target SKU against Fortinet's hardware compatibility documentation for the specific chassis model before ordering quantities.

How does FortiOS treat a third-party FN-TRAN-SFP+GC compatible that identifies itself with Fortinet-recognised EEPROM?

FortiOS reads the SFP+ EEPROM vendor identity at link-up and surfaces a console or log message when a transceiver is flagged as not certified by Fortinet. The message is informational; whether a specific third-party module produces it depends on the module's EEPROM encoding and the specific FortiOS release. EdgeOptic codes this compatible for Fortinet hardware; the exact FortiOS behaviour should be validated against the running FortiOS release on the target FortiGate before deployment, and the outcome matched against the Fortinet documentation for that release.
