Fortinet compatible FN-TRAN-SFP+LR Description

The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-10 is a compatible replacement for the Fortinet FN-TRAN-SFP+LR 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver. It supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fiber at 1310nm with a maximum reach of 10km, using a duplex LC/UPC connector. The module is coded with Fortinet-compatible EEPROM data and is recognized by FortiOS without requiring any CLI override commands.

The transmitter uses a 1310nm DFB laser with an output power range of –8.2dBm to +0.5dBm. The receiver uses a PIN photodiode with a sensitivity of –14.4dBm at BER 10⁻¹², providing a channel insertion loss allowance of 6.2dB per IEEE 802.3ae over ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber. The operating wavelength range is 1260nm to 1355nm. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps with 64B/66B encoding.

The FN-TRAN-SFP+LR is supported on FortiGate next-generation firewalls with SFP+ interfaces, including the FortiGate 100F, 200F, 400E, 600E, 1000D, 1100E, 2200E, 3200D, 3400E, 3600E, and 3700D series. It is also compatible with FortiSwitch models including the 124F, 148F, 424E, 448E, 1024E, and 1048E. Any FortiGate or FortiSwitch model with SFP+ ports will accept this module.

Fortinet previously used the FG-TRAN-SFP+LR part number (FG prefix for FortiGate-branded accessories). The current catalog uses the FN-TRAN-SFP+LR designation (FN prefix for unified Fortinet branding). Both part numbers refer to the same 10GBASE-LR module with identical optical specifications and work on all supported FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms.

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM) is supported per SFF-8472 Rev 12.4. The module reports transmit and receive optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage. Alarm and warning thresholds are factory-set. The module is MSA compliant and classified as Class 1 laser safe per IEC 60825-1. It is CE and RoHS certified with a commercial operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. Typical power consumption is under 1W.

The FN-TRAN-SFP+LR operates over standard OS2 single-mode fiber. The minimum recommended link length is 2 meters to avoid receiver saturation; for shorter patch cables, an inline optical attenuator (5–10dB) is recommended. The module uses a bail-clasp latch mechanism and supports hot-swappable insertion in all standard SFP+ cage types, operating at 10G line rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FN-TRAN-SFP+LR and FG-TRAN-SFP+LR?

FN-TRAN-SFP+LR and FG-TRAN-SFP+LR are the same 10GBASE-LR transceiver under different Fortinet naming conventions. The FG prefix was used when accessories were branded under the FortiGate product line. Fortinet later unified its part numbering under the FN prefix. Both share identical optical parameters (1310nm, 10km, LC duplex) and work on all supported FortiGate and FortiSwitch platforms.

How do I check SFP+ transceiver status on FortiOS?

In FortiOS CLI, run "diagnose hardware deviceinfo nic [port]" to read DDM values. Verify TX power is within –8.2 to +0.5dBm and RX power is between –14.4dBm and +0.5dBm. RX power above +0.5dBm indicates receiver saturation — insert an inline attenuator. In FortiOS 7.x, transceiver details are also visible in the GUI under Network > Interfaces.

Does FortiOS block third-party SFP+ modules?

No. FortiOS does not enforce OEM-only transceiver policies. Third-party SFP+ modules with compatible EEPROM coding are accepted without CLI overrides or license keys. The EdgeOptic FN-TRAN-SFP+LR is coded with Fortinet-compatible EEPROM data for recognition on FortiGate and FortiSwitch.

Can I use FN-TRAN-SFP+LR in FortiSwitch SFP28 ports?

Yes. SFP+ modules are backward-compatible with SFP28 (25G) cages and will operate at 10G line rate. FortiSwitch models with SFP28 uplinks (such as the 3048E) accept SFP+ modules when the port speed is configured for 10G.
