Fortinet compatible FN-TRAN-SX Description

EdgeOptic's FN-TRAN-SX compatible is a Fortinet-coded version of the EdgeOptic 1.25G-SFP-550D multi-vendor 1000BASE-SX transceiver. It is an SFP module for duplex multimode fiber (MMF) with an LC/UPC interface, built to the IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-SX standard and 1G Fibre Channel SW (FC-PI). The module is coded with Fortinet-recognized EEPROM, so it works on FortiGate and FortiSwitch SFP ports as a drop-in for the original FN-TRAN-SX.

The transmitter is an 850nm VCSEL paired with a PIN photodiode receiver. The module carries a minimum guaranteed optical budget of 7.5 dB, which supports a reach of up to 550 m over MMF. Reach is an indicative figure derived from the guaranteed optical budget and typical fiber attenuation; OM1 (62.5µm) tops out near 275 m, with 550 m on OM2 grade and above. Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM/DDM) reports transmit power, receive power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage over the 2-wire serial interface. The module operates across the standard 0 to 70°C range at +3.3V and runs Gigabit Ethernet at 1.25 Gbps or 1G Fibre Channel at 1.0625 Gbps.

The module is CE and RoHS compliant, Class 1 laser rated, and built to the SFP INF-8074i multi-source agreement. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms, it ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the FN-TRAN-SX need any FortiGate configuration when linking to a Cisco switch or firewall?

On a direct FortiGate-to-Cisco ASA or Nexus link, the Fortinet configuration guidance for the FN-TRAN-SX is to disable auto-negotiation on both sides: set the FortiGate interface to mediatype gmii with speed 1000full, and set the Cisco side to speed nonegotiate. This applies to FortiGate v7 models that have configurable SFP ports; shared-media port models do not support the mediatype setting. EdgeOptic's compatible carries the same Fortinet EEPROM coding, so the same guidance applies in that deployment scenario.
