HP compatible R0R42A Description

EdgeOptic's R0R42A compatible is an HPE-coded 25GBASE-SR SFP28 transceiver built as a direct replacement for the HPE R0R42A (spare part P15892-001). It ships with HPE-recognized EEPROM so HPE Synergy frames and ProLiant DL servers identify the optic as a native HPE part through the iLO optical-validation path. Link-up, receive-optical-signal and DOM telemetry surface through iLO and the standard NIC driver stack rather than through any vendor-specific override.

Optical behavior is 25GBASE-SR per IEEE 802.3by Clause 112 over duplex multi-mode fiber. HPE rates R0R42A at 30m over OM3 and OM4, a conservative reach target suited to server-side cabling inside a rack or between adjacent cabinets. The root 25G-SFP28-100 specification reaches 70m on OM3 and 100m on OM4 at full 25GBASE-SR tolerances, so R0R42A has margin beyond the HPE 30m label on clean cabling; for procurement planning, follow the HPE 30m rating. Line signaling rate is 25.78125 Gbd, single-rate, per IEEE 802.3by Clause 112. Transmit power is -8.4 to +2.4 dBm, receive sensitivity -10.3 dBm, link budget 5.3 dB with host RS-FEC per IEEE 802.3by Clause 108. Duplex LC/UPC, DOM per SFF-8472, 0.3W typical power. Operating case temperature is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.

R0R42A is the HPE Networking 25Gb SFP28 SR optic labelled by HPE at the 30m reach tier, distinct from Q2P64A which is the 100m SFP28 SR OPN intended for top-of-rack and leaf-switch aggregation. R0R42A is the expected SKU when a procurement team specifies an HPE Synergy compute-module NIC, a ProLiant DL server carrying a 25GbE adapter in a compact cabling topology, or an HPE FlexFabric 10/25Gb adapter for storage-fabric or server-to-top-of-rack runs under 30m. The Mellanox ConnectX silicon that HPE integrates into most 25GbE ProLiant and Synergy adapters is the same underlying ASIC as stand-alone Mellanox 25G NICs; the HPE coding layer is what distinguishes an HPE-branded optic and is what the EdgeOptic compatible replicates.

On HPE hosts the practical interoperability concern is the optical-validation check that iLO and the ConnectX firmware run on insertion. EdgeOptic's HPE-coded EEPROM carries the vendor and part-number strings that the HPE validation path expects, so on default ProLiant and Synergy firmware images the module is accepted on the standard acceptance path. Environments running hardened validation policies or strict asset-inventory controls should verify the expected vendor and PN strings against the local policy before deployment; EdgeOptic can supply the exact EEPROM strings for allowlist entry on request. The HPE Server Hardware Compatibility Matrix and the HPE QuickSpecs for the specific ProLiant or Synergy generation remain the authoritative references for adapter-to-chassis qualification.

On FEC, the R0R42A optical path is agnostic to the host FEC mode. 25G FEC is configured on the MAC layer at each link partner. In typical ProLiant-to-top-of-rack deployments terminating on an Aruba CX or FlexFabric 25G switch, RS-FEC per IEEE 802.3by Clause 108 is the default end-to-end path and is the mode this module is specified against. Clause 74 Fire Code FEC (BASE-R) and no-FEC operation are supported at the optical layer where both link partners are configured for that FEC profile. DOM registers for transmit power, receive power, supply voltage, laser bias current and module case temperature are accessible through standard SFF-8472 reads on iLO, through ethtool on Linux hosts with a compatible SFP28 driver and through the native SFP28 EEPROM access on any host. Every unit is factory-tested to the 25GBASE-SR optical specification per IEEE 802.3by Clause 112 before dispatch.

For volume pricing, HPE allowlist EEPROM strings for pre-deployment verification, or a cross-reference against Q2P64A for longer 100m runs and against 845398-B21 for server NIC spares, contact our sales team and we will respond within one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HPE R0R42A the same optic as the Q2P64A?

No. Both are HPE 25GBASE-SR SFP28 modules at 850nm, and both use an 850nm VCSEL transmitter, but HPE rates them at different reach tiers. R0R42A is labelled by HPE at 30m over OM3 and OM4 and is the expected SKU for server-side cabling in HPE Synergy, ProLiant DL and FlexFabric contexts where runs are inside a rack or between adjacent cabinets. Q2P64A is the 100m OM4 OPN intended for top-of-rack and leaf-switch aggregation runs. HPE spare-part numbers also differ (R0R42A spare is P15892-001; Q2P64A spare is 878406-001). Order against the reach tier the physical cabling needs, and confirm the spare-part number on the HPE QuickSpecs for the specific chassis.

Which HPE servers and adapters does the R0R42A ship with?

R0R42A is specified as the HPE 25Gb SFP28 SR optic across HPE Synergy compute modules with 25GbE mezzanine adapters, HPE ProLiant DL servers carrying HPE 25GbE NICs built on Mellanox ConnectX-5 or ConnectX-6 silicon, and HPE FlexFabric 10/25Gb adapters configured for 25G links. The exact adapter-to-chassis qualification for a specific ProLiant generation is published in the HPE Server Hardware Compatibility Matrix and in the per-chassis QuickSpecs. Verify against those references for your configuration before ordering; EdgeOptic can supply a sample for pre-deployment qualification.

Does the R0R42A run on OM3 fiber or does it need OM4?

Both. HPE rates R0R42A at 30m on OM3 and 30m on OM4; the 30m label is the HPE procurement target and both OM3 and OM4 deliver that reach inside the rated budget. At full 25GBASE-SR specification the underlying module has margin beyond 30m on OM3 and OM4 (the root 25G-SFP28-100 product is specified at 70m OM3 and 100m OM4 under IEEE 802.3by), but for HPE warranty and acceptance purposes follow the 30m HPE rating. For runs beyond 30m on HPE hosts, Q2P64A is the 100m OM4 OPN to specify.

Will HPE iLO and the ConnectX firmware accept the EdgeOptic R0R42A compatible without a validation warning?

On default ProLiant, Synergy and FlexFabric adapter firmware images the HPE-coded EEPROM matches the vendor and part-number strings that the HPE validation path expects, so the module is accepted on the standard acceptance path. Environments that have applied hardened asset-inventory or strict optical-validation policies should verify the expected vendor and PN strings against the local policy before deployment. Contact us for the exact EEPROM strings for allowlist entry; the HPE Server Hardware Compatibility Matrix for the specific chassis remains the authoritative procurement reference.
