IBM compatible 23R1701 Description
23R1701 is IBM's ordering part number for a 4Gb Fibre Channel long-wavelength SFP transceiver, primarily associated with IBM TotalStorage SAN switch configurations. EdgeOptic's compatible replacement is built on our 10G-SFP-10 SFP+ platform, providing dual-rate 4GFC/8GFC FC support as an upgrade from the original 4GFC-only specification.
IBM issued multiple part numbers for 4GFC LW SFP modules across different system packaging and feature code combinations. The 23R1701 and 23R1703 share the same optical and electrical specification — both are 4.25 Gbps, 1310 nm, long-wavelength SFPs. The distinction is administrative: IBM's parts database assigns different numbers based on the system or feature in which the module ships. When replacing a failed or end-of-life 23R1701, the correct EdgeOptic compatible matches this specific part number in EEPROM coding.
The EdgeOptic replacement adds 8GFC (8.5 Gbps) support alongside the original 4GFC rate, useful if the module is redeployed into an 8Gb-capable switch. Reach remains 10 km over ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber, matching the original LW specification. The dual-rate capability is the primary upgrade value — a single module covers both 4GFC and 8GFC applications without needing separate inventory.
Because the replacement is SFP+ form factor, the host switch must have SFP+ cages. IBM's 8Gb-generation Brocade-OEM SAN switches (2498-B24, 2498-B40, and later models) use SFP+ cages that accept both SFP and SFP+ modules. Older TotalStorage 4Gb switches with SFP-only ports — such as the 2005-series — cannot accept the SFP+ replacement. Check the switch model's hardware specification before ordering. IBM's Hardware Maintenance Manual for each machine type lists supported transceiver form factors and compatible part numbers.
Optical parameters: 1310 nm DFB laser, PIN photodiode receiver, duplex LC/UPC connector, 10 km reach over ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber. The dual-rate design auto-negotiates between 4GFC and 8GFC based on port configuration. DDM per SFF-8472 is fully supported, providing transmit and receive power levels, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage through Fabric OS monitoring commands.
MSA-compliant per SFF-8431/SFF-8432, CE/RoHS certified, commercial temperature range (0 to 70 °C). The module includes a lifetime warranty and is tested before dispatch. For volume pricing or migration planning, contact our sales team
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the EdgeOptic 23R1701 replacement at 8GFC in a switch that originally ran 4GFC?
Only if the switch hardware supports 8Gb FC. The module itself supports both 4GFC and 8GFC, but the line rate is determined by the switch port configuration. On a 4Gb-only switch, the module operates at 4GFC. On an 8Gb-capable switch, it negotiates to 8GFC if the port is configured for it.
Does the 23R1701 replacement require any Fabric OS configuration changes?
No. The EdgeOptic module is EEPROM-coded for IBM and is recognized by Fabric OS as a supported transceiver. No unsupported-optic CLI commands are needed. DDM values appear normally in sfpshow output.
