IBM compatible 23R1703 Description
23R1703 is IBM's part number for a 4Gb Fibre Channel long-wavelength SFP transceiver from the TotalStorage generation of SAN switches. EdgeOptic's compatible replacement is built on our 10G-SFP-10 SFP+ platform, which provides a direct upgrade path from the original 4GFC-only SFP to a dual-rate 4GFC/8GFC SFP+ module with 10 km reach.
The original 23R1703 is an SFP (not SFP+) form factor rated at 4.25 Gbps (4GFC) with 10 km reach over single-mode fiber. The EdgeOptic replacement is an SFP+ module that supports both 4.25 Gbps and 8.5 Gbps (8GFC). A single replacement module covers the original 4GFC application and also supports 8GFC, which is useful if the module is redeployed into an 8Gb-capable switch.
A related IBM part number, 23R1701, carries the same optical specification and generation as the 23R1703. IBM assigned different ordering numbers to these modules based on system configuration and feature code packaging. Both are 4GFC LW SFPs from the same era. EdgeOptic offers compatible replacements for each part number with the appropriate EEPROM coding.
The SFP+ form factor requires an SFP+ cage on the host switch. IBM Brocade-based SAN switches from the 8Gb generation onward — such as the 2498-series (SAN24B-4, SAN40B-4) and later — use SFP+ cages that accept both SFP and SFP+ modules mechanically. Older 4Gb-only switches with SFP-only cages (such as the 2005-B16 TotalStorage) will not accept an SFP+ module. Verify the switch model's port type before ordering. IBM's sales configurator and Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for each machine type list the supported transceiver form factors.
The transceiver uses a 1310 nm DFB laser transmitter and a PIN photodiode receiver over ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber with a duplex LC/UPC interface. The dual-rate design auto-negotiates between 4GFC and 8GFC depending on the switch port configuration. DDM per SFF-8472 reports transmit power, receive power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage through Fabric OS CLI and IBM management platforms.
MSA-compliant per SFF-8431 and SFF-8432, CE/RoHS certified, commercial temperature range (0 to 70 °C). The module includes a lifetime warranty and is tested before dispatch. For volume pricing or project support, contact our sales team
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the EdgeOptic 23R1703 replacement fit in an IBM 2005-B16 TotalStorage switch?
No. The 2005-B16 is a 4Gb-only switch with SFP cages, not SFP+ cages. The EdgeOptic replacement is SFP+ form factor and will not physically fit. It is compatible with 8Gb-generation IBM SAN switches (2498-series and later) that have SFP+ ports.
What is the difference between the 23R1703 and 23R1701?
Both are IBM 4GFC long-wavelength SFP transceivers with identical optical specifications. IBM assigned different ordering part numbers for different system configurations and feature codes. EdgeOptic offers compatible replacements for each with the correct EEPROM coding.
