The EdgeOptic 10G-NIC-X540-2T is a dual port 10GBASE-T network interface card built on the Intel X540 Ethernet controller. Each RJ45 port runs 10GbE, 1GbE or 100Mb over a PCI Express 2.1 x8 host interface at 5GT/s or 2.5GT/s.
Copper reach extends to 55 meters on CAT6 cabling and 100 meters on CAT6A. Link and activity LEDs show green at 10Gbps and yellow at 1Gbps.
The controller supports SR-IOV with 64 virtual functions, VMDq with 64 pools, and VLAN tagging for virtualized environments. Storage over Ethernet runs through iSCSI, FCoE and NFS, including iSCSI boot, with jumbo frames, PXE boot and Wake on LAN support.
Standards support covers IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T, 802.3x flow control, 802.3ad link aggregation, 802.1Q VLAN, 802.1Qaz Enhanced Transmission Selection and 802.1Qbb Priority Flow Control.
The card measures 146 by 69mm with a low profile bracket attached and a standard bracket. Yes. The card uses a PCI Express 2.1 x8 edge connector, and a PCIe x8 card is mechanically and electrically compatible with a PCIe x16 slot. The slot negotiates down to the card's x8 link width and the card operates normally.
What is the difference between this X540 RJ45 card and an SFP+ 10G card such as the Intel X520-DA2?
The 10G-NIC-X540-2T is built on the Intel X540 controller and supports 10GBASE-T copper over RJ45 only. There is no SFP+ variant of the X540 controller. The X520-DA2 uses a separate Intel controller built for SFP+ fiber or direct attach copper connections. Choose the X540-2T for RJ45 copper cabling and the X520 family for SFP+ transceivers or DAC cables.
Does the 10G-NIC-X540-2T support 2.5GbE or 5GbE?
No. Each port on the X540 controller operates at 10GbE, 1GbE or 100Mb only. The intermediate 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T rates defined in IEEE 802.3bz are not part of the X540 controller's supported speed set.
