PLANET compatible MTB-LR Description
MTB-LR is PLANET Technology’s part number for a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver designed for their managed switch and media converter product lines. EdgeOptic’s compatible replacement is built on our 10G-SFP-10 platform, coded with PLANET-recognized vendor data so the switch firmware accepts the module without third-party optic warnings. The compatible is a direct functional replacement for the original PLANET transceiver.
The transceiver operates at 1310 nm using a DFB laser and PIN photodiode receiver, supporting 10 Gbps over up to 10 km of G.652 single-mode fiber through duplex LC/UPC connectors. It conforms to IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, SFF-8432, and DDM per SFF-8472. The link budget supports the standard 6.3 dB maximum channel insertion loss. Commercial operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C, and power consumption remains within the SFP+ MSA specification.
PLANET Technology is a Taiwan-based networking vendor whose switches are deployed across SMB, campus, and industrial network environments in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. The MTB-LR is listed for the XGS3-24042 L3 managed switch, the GS-5220 series L2+ managed switches (including the GS-5220-16S8CR and GS-5220-24UPL4XR), the SGS-6310 series industrial L3 managed switches, and the XGS-6350 series L3 managed switches. PLANET also offers the MTB-SR (short-reach multimode) variant; the MTB-LR is the single-mode option for distances beyond 300 m.
In a typical PLANET campus deployment, the MTB-LR provides 10G uplinks between access-layer GS-4210 or GSD-1020S switches and an aggregation-layer XGS3-24042 or GS-5220. The 10 km reach is sufficient for inter-building fiber runs where multimode short-reach optics cannot cover the distance. PLANET’s product line spans entry-level unmanaged switches through L3 managed chassis, and the MTB-LR fits into any SFP+ slot across the managed range. In industrial deployments using the SGS-6310 series, the standard commercial-temperature MTB-LR is suitable for controlled indoor environments; for extended-temperature requirements, verify the specific operating range needed.
PLANET switches generally accept third-party SFP+ optics, but EdgeOptic codes the MTB-LR compatible specifically for PLANET platforms to ensure DDM data populates correctly in both the web management interface and SNMP MIBs. DDM telemetry includes Tx/Rx optical power, temperature, supply voltage, and laser bias current with SFF-8472 alarm thresholds for proactive fault detection. Frequently Asked Questions
Which PLANET switches support the MTB-LR?
PLANET lists the MTB-LR for the XGS3-24042, GS-5220 series (including GS-5220-16S8CR and GS-5220-24UPL4XR), SGS-6310 series, and XGS-6350 series switches. Any PLANET managed switch with an SFP+ port should accept the module.
Can the MTB-LR be used in PLANET industrial switches?
Yes. The SGS-6310 industrial L3 managed switch series supports the MTB-LR in its SFP+ slots. For environments with temperatures below 0°C or above 70°C, verify the required operating temperature rating — the standard MTB-LR is rated for commercial temperature (0°C to 70°C).
