PLANET compatible MTB-RJ Description

EdgeOptic's PLANET MTB-RJ compatible is a PLANET-coded 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ transceiver for PLANET Technology commercial managed switches with 10G SFP+ uplink cages. EdgeOptic programs the module EEPROM to match the PLANET MTB-RJ vendor profile so the transceiver enumerates identically to the OEM module on PLANET platforms that reference this ordering code in their transceiver compatibility list.

PLANET markets the MTB-RJ as a 10GBASE-T copper module for enterprise, telecom and ISP deployments. Confirmed platform context covers PLANET's commercial XGS managed switch families: XGS-6350 series (Layer 3 with 24-port 10G SFP+ configurations), XGS-5240 series (Layer 2+ 10G aggregation) and XGS-6320 series (Layer 3 10G core). Any PLANET commercial managed switch with a standard 10G SFP+ cage accepts the MTB-RJ. The IGS industrial switch line uses a different product class at 10G and is outside the MTB-RJ compatibility scope; industrial-temperature deployments should select a purpose-built industrial module rather than the MTB-RJ.

The transceiver operates per IEEE 802.3an for 10GBASE-T and IEEE 802.3bz for 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, with 1000BASE-T multi-rate fallback. Reach is 30 m at 10G on Cat6a or Cat7, with extended 100 m reach at 2.5G and 1G on Cat5e or better; 5GBASE-T requires Cat6 or better for the full 100 m reach per IEEE 802.3bz. The multi-rate envelope supports wiring-closet deployments that upgrade incrementally from 1G to 2.5G or 5G before committing to a full 10G cable plant. Electrical and management interfaces follow SFF-8431 and SFF-8432.

Operating temperature covers 0 to 65 °C commercial grade with CE and RoHS certification. Because this is a copper module, DOM telemetry is scoped to the fields that apply to a non-optical SFP+: case temperature, supply voltage, and link status. Transmit optical power, receive optical power, and laser bias current do not exist on this part and are not reported through PLANET switch CLI or web management output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MTB-RJ intended for PLANET's commercial XGS switches or for the IGS industrial line?

The MTB-RJ is a commercial-grade module and the confirmed compatibility scope is PLANET's XGS managed switch families: XGS-6350 series (Layer 3), XGS-5240 series (Layer 2+) and XGS-6320 series. PLANET markets it for enterprise, telecom and ISP deployments. The IGS industrial switch line operates at a different product class at 10G, and PLANET does not publish a formal MTB-RJ compatibility list for IGS platforms. Industrial-temperature deployments should use a purpose-built industrial module rather than the MTB-RJ.

Does the MTB-RJ support 2.5G and 5G speeds on PLANET XGS multi-gig ports, or is it 10G and 1G only?

The MTB-RJ chipset supports 1G, 2.5G, 5G and 10G per IEEE 802.3an and 802.3bz. PLANET's own spec sheet confirms the four-rate envelope, with 30 m reach at 10G on Cat6a, 100 m reach at 2.5G and 1G on Cat5e or better, and 5GBASE-T at the full 100 m reach on Cat6 or better per IEEE 802.3bz. Multi-rate negotiation on the XGS switch side depends on the switch firmware port profile; some older XGS firmware revisions only expose 1G and 10G on SFP+ ports, in which case upgrade the switch firmware before provisioning 2.5G or 5G client links.
