40G PSM4 QSFP+ 1.4km Transceiver Description
Our EDGEOPTIC 40G-QSFP-1.4 is a multi-vendor compatible 40G PSM4 QSFP+ optical transceiver module designed for cost-effective 40 Gigabit Ethernet applications over single-mode fiber infrastructure. The 40G-QSFP-1.4 module operates with four parallel lanes at 1310nm wavelength for both transmission and reception, supporting data rates up to 44.8 Gbps across various network protocols and applications. Our 40G PSM4 QSFP+ transceiver utilizes FP (Fabry-Perot) laser technology for transmission and PIN photodiode receivers, optimized for intermediate-reach data center and campus connectivity.
The transceiver delivers a 6.3 dB guaranteed optical link budget, which determines the maximum transmission distance capabilities. Over standard single-mode fiber with parallel architecture, the module reliably achieves distances up to 1.4 kilometers, providing robust connectivity for data center interconnects and campus backbone applications. However, distance is just an indicative parameter calculated for convenience of identification – ultimately we calculate distance considering minimum optical budget and average attenuation of optical cabling in the industry.
40G-QSFP-1.4 compatible PSM4 module features hot-pluggable QSFP+ form factor with MTP/MPO-12 APC connector supporting 8 fibers (4 transmit and 4 receive channels). The angled physical contact (APC) connector minimizes back-reflection for improved signal quality over single-mode fiber. The electrical interface conforms to INF-8438i and SFF-8436 MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specifications, ensuring seamless compatibility with standard QSFP+ host systems across multiple vendor equipment platforms. Our 40G PSM4 QSFP+ transceiver can be encoded to be compatible and successfully operate in over 80 different brands of networking equipment.
The module incorporates comprehensive DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) functionality providing real-time monitoring of critical operational parameters including per-lane transmitted and received optical power levels, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage. The PSM4 architecture offers cost advantages over CWDM solutions for intermediate distances while maintaining excellent optical performance. This diagnostic information is accessible via MSA-compatible EEPROM interface, enabling proactive network management and troubleshooting capabilities. Operating within a standard 0 to 70°C temperature range with single +3.3V power supply, the module ensures consistent performance in controlled data center environments.
Standards compliance encompasses IEEE 802.3ba for 40 Gigabit Ethernet, alongside OTU3/OTU3e2 support at 43.01/44.58 Gbps for Optical Transport Networks and STM-256 compatibility for SDH/SONET applications at 39.81 Gbps. The transceiver achieves broad multi-vendor interoperability through strict adherence to QSFP+ MSA standards, though equipment with vendor-specific module authentication may require custom EEPROM programming for seamless compatibility. Our 40G QSFP-1.4 transceiver is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with Class 1 FDA and IEC60825-1 laser safety standards.
Typical deployment scenarios include data center spine-leaf architectures, campus core networks, high-performance computing clusters, and storage area network extensions. The PSM4 technology provides an economical alternative to LR4 modules for distances beyond multimode reach while utilizing lower-cost optical components than CWDM solutions. Because our focus is providing superior quality service, we perform rigorous quality checks before delivery including optical power validation, APC connector inspection, and QSFP+ transceiver EEPROM memory data testing.
