40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ Transceiver Description

Our EDGEOPTIC 40G-QSFP-150 is a multi-vendor compatible 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ optical transceiver module designed for high-speed 40 Gigabit Ethernet applications operating over multimode fiber infrastructure. The 40G-QSFP-150 module operates at 850nm wavelength for both transmission and reception across four parallel optical lanes, supporting data rates up to 44.8 Gbps for various network protocols and applications. Our 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ transceiver utilizes VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology for transmission and PIN photodiode arrays for receiving, optimized for short-reach data center connectivity.

The transceiver ensures a 1.9 dB guaranteed optical link budget, which determines the maximum transmission distance capabilities. Over OM4 multimode fiber, the module achieves distances up to 150 meters, while OM3 cabling supports approximately 100 meters, and OM5 fiber maintains the 150-meter reach with enhanced spectral efficiency. However, distance is just an indicative parameter calculated for ease of identification – ultimately we calculate distance considering minimum optical budget and average attenuation of optical cabling in the industry.

40G-QSFP-150 compatible 40GBASE-SR4 module features hot-pluggable QSFP+ form factor with MTP/MPO-12 UPC connector supporting 8 fibers (4 transmit and 4 receive channels). The electrical interface conforms to INF-8438i and SFF-8436 MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specifications, ensuring compatibility with standard QSFP+ host systems across multiple vendor equipment platforms. Our 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ transceiver can be encoded to be compatible and successfully operate in over 80 different brands of networking equipment.

The module incorporates comprehensive DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) functionality providing real-time operational data including transmitted and received optical power levels per channel, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage. This diagnostic information is accessible via MSA-compatible EEPROM interface, enabling proactive monitoring of transceiver health and performance parameters. Operating within a standard 0 to 70°C temperature range with single +3.3V power supply, the module maintains reliable performance in controlled data center environments.

Standards compliance encompasses IEEE 802.3ba for 40 Gigabit Ethernet, alongside OTU3/OTU3e2 support for Optical Transport Networks and STM-256 for SDH/SONET applications at 39.81 Gbps. The transceiver achieves multi-vendor interoperability through strict adherence to QSFP+ MSA standards, though equipment with vendor-specific module authentication may require custom EEPROM programming for seamless compatibility. Our 40G QSFP+ SR4 transceiver is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with Class 1 FDA and IEC60825-1 laser safety standards.
