40G SWDM4 QSFP+ 350m MMF Transceiver Description

Our EDGEOPTIC SWDM4-40G-QSFP-350 is a multi-vendor compatible 40G SWDM4 QSFP+ optical transceiver module engineered for extended-reach 40 Gigabit Ethernet applications over multimode fiber infrastructure using shortwave wavelength division multiplexing technology. The SWDM4-40G-QSFP-350 module utilizes four-channel SWDM technology operating at 850nm, 880nm, 910nm, and 940nm wavelengths for both transmission and reception, supporting data rates up to 41.25 Gbps across various network protocols and applications. Our 40G SWDM4 QSFP+ transceiver employs VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology for transmission and PIN photodiode receivers, optimized for duplex fiber connectivity with extended multimode reach.

The transceiver ensures a 4.5 dB guaranteed optical link budget, which determines the maximum transmission distance capabilities. Over OM4 and OM5 multimode fiber, the module reliably achieves distances up to 350 meters using only a duplex fiber pair, significantly extending reach beyond traditional 40GBASE-SR4 while maintaining the fiber savings of BiDi solutions. However, distance is just an indicative parameter calculated for ease of identification – ultimately we calculate distance considering minimum optical budget and average attenuation of optical cabling in the industry.

SWDM4-40G-QSFP-350 compatible SWDM module features hot-pluggable QSFP+ form factor with duplex LC/UPC connectors, dramatically reducing fiber requirements compared to parallel optics architectures. The SWDM4 technology multiplexes four wavelengths over a single fiber pair, combining the extended reach of wavelength division multiplexing with the simplicity of duplex connectivity. The electrical interface conforms to QSFP+ MSA, SFF-8636, and SWDM MSA specifications, ensuring seamless compatibility with standard QSFP+ host systems across multiple vendor equipment platforms. Our 40G SWDM4 QSFP+ transceiver can be encoded to be compatible and successfully operate in over 80 different brands of networking equipment.

The module incorporates comprehensive DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) functionality providing real-time operational data including per-wavelength transmitted and received optical power levels, module temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage monitoring. With typical power consumption of 4.5W, the module maintains thermal efficiency while delivering extended reach performance. This diagnostic information is accessible via MSA-compatible EEPROM interface, enabling proactive network management and performance optimization strategies. Operating within a standard 0 to 70°C temperature range with single +3.3V power supply, the module ensures stable performance in controlled data center environments.

Standards compliance encompasses IEEE 802.3ba for 40 Gigabit Ethernet, alongside specialized SWDM MSA specifications for shortwave wavelength division multiplexing applications. The transceiver achieves broad multi-vendor interoperability through strict adherence to QSFP+ MSA and SWDM Alliance standards, though equipment with proprietary module verification may require custom EEPROM programming for complete compatibility. Our SWDM4-40G-QSFP-350 transceiver is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with Class 1 FDA and IEC60825-1 laser safety standards.

Primary deployment scenarios include fiber-constrained data centers, high-density spine-leaf architectures, campus network upgrades, and applications requiring extended multimode reach without single-mode fiber migration. The SWDM4 technology bridges the gap between short-reach SR4 and single-mode solutions, providing 350-meter connectivity over existing OM4 infrastructure using only duplex fibers. Because our focus is delivering superior quality service, we perform rigorous quality checks before shipment including wavelength accuracy verification, optical power validation across all SWDM channels, connector cleanliness inspection, and QSFP+ transceiver EEPROM memory data testing.
