RAD compatible SFP-17BD Description
EdgeOptic's SFP-17BD compatible is a RAD-coded version of the EdgeOptic BiDi-1.25G-SFP-21-BD multi-vendor single-fiber BiDi SFP transceiver. It transmits at 1490nm and receives at 1310nm on a single strand of single-mode fiber, matching the downstream (side B) half of a WDM BiDi pair. The module is coded to identify as the RAD SFP-17BD ordering code. Built to the root product's 20km reach with a 15dB guaranteed optical link budget, the module uses a DFB laser and PIN photodiode. Transmit power ranges from −9 to 3 dBm, receive sensitivity is rated at −22 dBm, and receive overload sits at −3 dBm.
Passbands span 1470 to 1510nm on the transmit side and 1290 to 1330nm on the receive side, each 40nm wide, with chromatic dispersion tolerance of 430 to 500 ps/nm. The compatible runs on a +3.3V supply across a 0 to 70C operating range and reports digital diagnostics per SFF-8472. Because SFP-17BD carries the downstream wavelength assignment, it must be paired with an upstream module at the far end of the link, such as EdgeOptic's SFP-17AD compatible, rather than another SFP-17BD.
The compatible meets CE, RoHS, Class 1 laser safety per FDA/IEC 60825-1, INF-8074i, and SFP MSA specifications. EdgeOptic backs the SFP-17BD compatible with a lifetime warranty and 15+ years of compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RAD SFP-17BD the downstream (BX-D) side of the BiDi pair, and does it pair with a side-A module at the far end?
Yes. SFP-17BD transmits at 1490nm and receives at 1310nm, which is the downstream (side B) half of a single-fiber WDM BiDi pair. The far end of the link needs an upstream (side A) module transmitting at 1310nm and receiving at 1490nm, such as EdgeOptic's SFP-17AD compatible. Two SFP-17BD modules will not link to each other.
RAD's OEM SFP-17BD is rated for 10 km; why does EdgeOptic's compatible ship with a 20 km / 15 dB budget?
The OEM SFP-17BD ordering code is documented at a 10 km, 1000BASE-BX10-D reach class. EdgeOptic's compatible is built to the 20km reach and 15dB guaranteed link budget of the underlying BiDi-1.25G-SFP-21-BD hardware, exceeding the OEM's published reach class. The OEM part itself is not rated for 20km; the extended budget applies to EdgeOptic's build.
Will a third-party SFP module work in RAD carrier-demarcation equipment?
RAD's own datasheet describes its pluggable transceivers as compliant with MSA specifications and interoperable with third-party standards-based devices. That is a general MSA-interoperability statement, not a confirmation for a specific RAD device model. Verify the target RAD platform's supported-optics documentation before deployment.
