Sophos compatible ITFZTCHLR Description
ITFZTCHLR is Sophos’s part number for a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver designed for their XG and XGS firewall appliance families. EdgeOptic’s compatible replacement is built on our 10G-SFP-10 platform, coded so the Sophos appliance recognizes the module and reports its status in the Sophos Firewall management console. The compatible provides identical performance to the original Sophos-branded optic across all supported appliance models.
The module operates at 1310 nm with a DFB laser transmitter and PIN photodiode receiver, supporting 10 Gbps over up to 10 km of G.652 single-mode fiber through duplex LC/UPC connectors. It complies with IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, SFF-8432, and SFF-8472 (DDM). The link budget supports the standard 6.3 dB maximum channel insertion loss. Commercial operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C, with power consumption under 1 W.
Sophos XGS firewall appliances with SFP+ ports include the XGS 4300, XGS 4500, XGS 5500, and XGS 6500 models. The older XG series (XG 430, XG 450, XG 550, XG 750) also accepts SFP+ modules in their flexi-port expansion bays. Desktop models like the XGS 87, XGS 107, and XGS 116 do not have SFP+ ports and are limited to copper interfaces. The ITFZTCHLR provides 10G connectivity for WAN uplinks to the service provider handoff, inter-firewall HA (high availability) heartbeat links, and connections to campus core switches where single-mode fiber is the medium.
In HA deployments, a pair of Sophos firewalls often uses dedicated 10G SFP+ links for heartbeat and state synchronization traffic. The ITFZTCHLR’s 10 km reach allows the primary and secondary firewalls to be placed in separate server rooms or buildings while maintaining the HA cluster over single-mode fiber. For shorter runs within the same rack, Sophos also lists short-reach SFP+ modules, but the LR variant provides flexibility if the HA pair is later relocated to separate sites during a network expansion. Some organizations also use the LR optic on the WAN-facing interface where the ISP handoff uses single-mode fiber with LC connectors.
EdgeOptic includes full DDM telemetry and a lifetime warranty on all Sophos-compatible optics. DDM readings (Tx/Rx optical power, temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current) appear in the Sophos Firewall console under the interface detail page. Frequently Asked Questions
Which Sophos appliances have SFP+ ports for the ITFZTCHLR?
The Sophos XGS 4300, XGS 4500, XGS 5500, and XGS 6500 have built-in SFP+ ports. The older XG 430, XG 450, XG 550, and XG 750 accept SFP+ modules through flexi-port expansion bays. Desktop models like the XGS 87 and XGS 107 do not have SFP+ ports.
Can I use the ITFZTCHLR for a Sophos HA heartbeat link?
Yes. A dedicated 10G SFP+ link between two Sophos firewalls is a common HA heartbeat and state synchronization configuration. The ITFZTCHLR’s 10 km reach supports HA pairs in separate rooms or buildings connected by single-mode fiber.
Does Sophos block third-party SFP+ modules?
Sophos appliances generally accept third-party SFP+ transceivers without vendor-lock restrictions. EdgeOptic’s ITFZTCHLR compatible is coded with the correct vendor data for Sophos, so the firewall console displays the module status and DDM readings normally.
Is the ITFZTCHLR compatible with Sophos Central managed appliances?
Yes. The SFP+ port and transceiver operation is handled at the hardware/firmware level, independent of the management platform. Whether the Sophos appliance is managed locally or through Sophos Central, the ITFZTCHLR functions identically.
