Source Photonics compatible SPQ-8E2-FR-CDFQA Description

SPQ-8E2-FR-CDFQA is Source Photonics' second-generation 400GBASE-FR4 QSFP-DD. Part number decode: "8E2" = 8-electrical-lane, gen-2 host interface -- distinct from the earlier SPQ-4E-FR-CDFB which ran 4 lanes. Same 400G FR4 optics on the line side, different internal electrical architecture on the host side. EdgeOptic's compatible matches this module.

Source Photonics has two FR4 lines side by side. The SPQ-4E series (CDFB, CDFC variants) runs 4x106.25G PAM4 lanes to the host. The SPQ-8E2 splits that into 8x53.125G PAM4 lanes instead. Optically they're identical: same CWDM wavelengths, same 2 km reach, same LC duplex connector. Where the difference matters is firmware -- the CMIS version and electrical lane configuration can affect switch compatibility. Check platform documentation before swapping one generation for the other.

Four CWDM wavelengths (1271/1291/1311/1331 nm), PAM4 at 106.25 Gbps per optical lane, 400G aggregate throughput. LC duplex over OS2 single-mode fiber, 2 km max reach. Budget: 4.0 dB (TX -3.3 to +3.5 dBm, RX -7.3 dBm). Under 11W power draw. EML transmitters and PIN receivers handle the optical conversion. KP4 FEC (RS(544,514)) required on the host. Full parameters on the 400GBASE-FR4 product page.

As an OEM component, the SPQ-8E2-FR-CDFQA appears in equipment from different switch vendors as a factory-installed module. EdgeOptic codes the compatible with vendor-specific EEPROM -- Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Huawei, and others. On Cisco networks, EdgeOptic programs Cisco-recognized EEPROM so Nexus and Catalyst accept it without CLI workarounds. Specify the target switch vendor when ordering.

Internal architecture: 8 electrical lanes at 53.125G PAM4 each on the host side (400GAUI-8). The module DSP multiplexes those into 4 optical CWDM lanes at 106.25G each. The 8-lane configuration is the more common arrangement in current-generation 400G switch ASICs -- most newer platforms expect it. The earlier SPQ-4E series used 4x106.25G host lanes, which some older ASIC generations required. Both work, but the 8E2 is the more reliable choice for newer hardware.

IEEE 802.3cu 400GBASE-FR4, QSFP-DD MSA, CE/RoHS compliant. DOM per CMIS via I2C -- TX/RX optical power per lane, temperature, bias current, supply voltage. 0 to 70 C commercial operating temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does '8E2' mean in the Source Photonics SPQ-8E2-FR-CDFQA part number?

"8E2" = 8 electrical lanes, second-generation design. The earlier SPQ-4E uses a 4-lane interface. Both deliver the same 400G FR4 optical performance.

Is the SPQ-8E2-FR-CDFQA a drop-in replacement for SPQ-4E-FR-CDFB?

Optically, yes -- same LC duplex, same CWDM4, same 2 km. But the host electrical interface and CMIS version differ between generations. Check switch platform documentation before swapping.
