10GBASE-USR SFP+ – Cisco FET-10G, Huawei SFP-10G-USR and Juniper EX-SFP-10GE-USR Story

10GBASE-USR SFP+ are transceivers designed for Ultra-Short Reach distance (up to 100m) used for 10G Ethernet applications and housed in SFP+ form-factor. Although this sounds very new, these transceivers are based on the good old 10G SFP+ SR [10G-SFP-300], 10Gbase-SR Optical Transceiver designed to work over Multimode Fiber (MMF) with Double LC Connectors with 10G Ethernet (10.31Gbps) and Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps) application support, all according to SFP+ Multi Source Agreement SFF-8431, industry standard. Let’s take a closer look at 10GBASE-USR SFP+ and 3 well-known brands, Cisco, Huawei, and Juniper versions of this product – Cisco FET-10G, Huawei SFP-10G-USR, and Juniper EX-SFP-10GE-USR.

10GBASE-USR SFP+ can be connected to any 10GBASE SR SFP+ (10G-SFP-300) by default. 10GBASE-USR SFP+ is different from 10G SFP+ SR by being made for a 100m distance. USR SFP+ utilizes the same 850 nm laser – VSCEL and 850 nm photodiode – PIN. However, the USR is all about saving power, which is why VSCEL uses transmits (Tx) with less optical power and PIN has a higher receiver (Rx) sensitivity.

CISCO FET-10G – Fabric Extender Transceiver that is for a distance of up to 100m and laser-optimized for OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber. FET-10G can be used for the Nexus product family, starting from model Nexus 2000. For other platforms, SFP-10G-SR or SFP-10G-SR-S should be used as a substitute.

Juniper EX-SFP-10GE-USR [740-030658] – SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ultra Short Reach transceiver that is for a distance of up to 100m and laser-optimized for OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber. EX-SFP-10GE-USR can be used in most Juniper Junos OS equipment for Routing, software-defined networking, and switching platforms.

Huawei Gigabit Ethernet 10GBASE-USR compliant transceiver that is for a distance of up to 100m and laser-optimized for OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber. SFP-10G-USR can be used and is supported in CloudEngine 9800, 8800, 7800, 6800, and 5800 Series Switches that have V100R002C00 and later versions.

10GBASE-USR SFP+ modules Juniper EX-SFP-10GE-USR, Cisco FET-10G and Huawei SFP-10G-USR parameters are almost the same as EDGE Optical Solutions product 10G-SFP-300. This shows that 10GBASE-USR SFP+ modules can be used together with mainstream 10GBASE-SR SFP+ modules without causing damage to each other.

The 10GBASE-USR SFP+ modules are an interesting option when compared to the 10GBASE-SR SFP+. However, 10GBASE-SR SFP+ can provide full substitution for 10GBASE-USR SFP+ (Ultra Short Reach) and is the go-to option for the industry. 10GBASE-SR has the added benefit – the ability to provide up to 300 meters of connection over OM3 Multimode fiber and up to 400 meters of connection over OM4/OM5 Multimode fiber.

10GBASE-USR SFP+ has been designed to cover 100 meters, but it does not have significant bonuses over 10GBASE-SR SFP+ (10G-SFP-300) as seen in the 10GBASE-USR SFP+ Parameters table.

That is why 10GBASE-SR SFP+ (10G-SFP-300) is the product to use when 10G Multimode connections need to be made.
