10G Base SR Compatible Transceiver Description

The EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-300 is a hot-pluggable 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver for short-reach 10 Gigabit Ethernet over multimode fiber. It uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter with an LC/UPC duplex connector and operates within the 0°C to 70°C commercial temperature range. IEEE 802.3ae compliant, interoperable with standards-conformant switch and router platforms.

Maximum supported distances depend on fiber grade: 300 m over OM3 and 400 m over OM4 or OM5, both within the module’s 6.1 dB optical budget. OM2 fiber (500 MHz·km modal bandwidth at 850 nm) is supported to approximately 82 m but is not recommended for new 10G installations. Legacy 62.5/125 µm fiber is limited to roughly 26 m, and 50/125 µm OM1 to 33 m. For reliable operation at full reach, OM3 or OM4 cable is the baseline recommendation.

Multi-rate capability from 1.25 Gbps to 11.32 Gbps lets the 10G-SFP-300 operate as a 1000BASE-SX module on SFP+ ports with dual-rate / rate-select support. No separate 1G and 10G optics inventory needed during phased network upgrades. The host port must be configured for dual-rate SFP+ operation (1G/10G rate-select) for 1G fallback to function.

EdgeOptic programs each 10G-SFP-300 with vendor-specific EEPROM coding for compatibility with over 80 switch and router brands, including Cisco, Juniper, Arista, HP/Aruba, and Dell. DDM is enabled by default, reporting transmit power, receive power, temperature, supply voltage, and laser bias current through the host’s management interface. The module conforms to SFF-8431 and SFF-8432 mechanical and electrical specifications.

Common deployments include data center top-of-rack interconnects, campus backbone links, and server-to-switch uplinks where multimode fiber is already in place. 10GBASE-SR is the most common 10G optical interface in enterprise and campus networks, driven by low per-port cost and compatibility with installed MMF infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 10G-SFP-300 work over OM2 multimode fiber?

OM2 is supported to approximately 82 m. The lower modal bandwidth of OM2 (500 MHz·km at 850 nm vs. 2000 MHz·km for OM3) limits reach due to modal dispersion at 10G data rates. IEEE 802.3ae specifies a maximum reach of 300 m only when using OM3 fiber; OM2 is limited to 82 m under the same standard. If the existing plant is OM2, keep cable runs under 80 m or upgrade to OM3/OM4.

Can the 10G-SFP-300 run at 1 Gbps for 1000BASE-SX operation?

Yes. The module supports data rates from 1.25 Gbps to 11.32 Gbps per SFF-8431 multi-rate specification. On switch ports with dual-rate / rate-select support, it operates as a 1000BASE-SX transceiver at 1.25 Gbps. The host port must be capable of 1G/10G rate-select on its SFP+ interfaces for this to work; not all platforms support it.

Will a 10GBASE-SR SFP+ module physically fit in a 1G SFP port?

SFP+ and SFP share the same form factor dimensions, so the module inserts physically. However, a 1G-only SFP port does not support the 10G electrical interface. The 10G-SFP-300 will not link up in a port that lacks SFP+ capability. For 1G operation, the host port must be an SFP+ port with dual-rate support enabled.

How does 10GBASE-SR SFP+ compare to a DAC cable for short-range 10G links?

Passive DAC (Direct Attach Copper) cables reach approximately 7 m and are best suited for within-rack connections. The 10G-SFP-300 supports up to 400 m on OM4 fiber, making it the standard choice for inter-rack, inter-row, and cross-building 10G links. Passive DAC cables consume less power and have lower latency at very short distances, but optical SFP+ SR modules are needed once the link exceeds passive DAC reach.
