10G Base SR Compatible Transceiver Description

The 10G-SFP-300 is a hot-pluggable 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver for short-reach 10 Gigabit Ethernet over multimode fiber. The transmitter is an 850 nm VCSEL driving an LC/UPC duplex connector; the receiver is a PIN photodiode. Operation is specified across the standard commercial range of 0°C to 70°C on a +3.3 V single supply. The module conforms to IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 for 10GBASE-SR, SFF-8431 for SFP+ electrical, SFF-8432 for the mechanical cage, and the SFP MSA.

Reach depends on the multimode fiber grade. OM3 (2000 MHz·km at 850 nm) supports 300 m. OM4 and OM5 (4700 MHz·km) extend to 400 m. Both targets are met within the module's 6.1 dB optical link budget. Legacy multimode types are limited by modal bandwidth: OM2 reaches roughly 82 m, OM1 50/125 μm reaches roughly 33 m, and 62.5/125 μm reaches roughly 26 m. For new 10G installations OM3 or OM4 is the baseline recommendation; OM2 and OM1 are appropriate only for short retrofit links inside the modal-bandwidth envelope.

Optical performance: TX output power −5 to 0 dBm, RX sensitivity −11.1 dBm, RX overload 0 dBm, TX/RX wavelength 850 nm with 20 nm bandwidth (840 to 860 nm). DDM is enabled by default and reports transmit power, receive power, temperature, supply voltage, and laser bias current through the host's I2C management interface, so engineers can correlate link errors with optical headroom in real time.

Multi-rate scope is the differentiator on this part. The supported data rate envelope is 1.25 Gbps to 11.32 Gbps per SFF-8431, which covers Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10.3125 Gbps) on the Ethernet side; 1G (1.0625 Gbps), 2G (2.125 Gbps), 4G (4.25 Gbps), 8G (8.5 Gbps), and 10G (10.52 Gbps) Fibre Channel on the storage side; and STM-64 (9.95 Gbps) for SONET/SDH. One part number replaces separate 1G SX and 10G SR optics during phased datacenter and SAN refreshes. The host port must support dual-rate / rate-select for 1G fallback to negotiate. OTN (OTU2/OTU4) is not in scope for this module.

Each unit is programmed with vendor-specific EEPROM coding for compatibility with 80+ switch and router brands, so the hardware drops into existing 10G aggregation deployments with EEPROM coding tuned to avoid third-party-transceiver warnings on supported hosts. Compliance: CE, Class 1 FDA and IEC 60825-1 laser safety, RoHS. Common deployments include data center top-of-rack uplinks, campus backbone aggregation, server-to-switch 10G links, and 1G to 10G Fibre Channel SAN runs over installed multimode plant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 10G-SFP-300 work over OM2 multimode fiber?

OM2 is supported to roughly 82 m. OM2's 500 MHz·km modal bandwidth at 850 nm is the limit, not the module's optical budget. IEEE 802.3ae specifies 300 m of 10GBASE-SR reach only on OM3-grade fiber (2000 MHz·km); on OM2 the reach drops to about 82 m at 10G data rates due to modal dispersion. If the existing plant is OM2 and runs are under 80 m, the module will link cleanly. For longer runs upgrade to OM3 or OM4.

Can the 10G-SFP-300 run at 1 Gbps for 1000BASE-SX operation?

Yes, on hosts that support dual-rate SFP+ ports. The module's data rate envelope is 1.25 Gbps to 11.32 Gbps per SFF-8431, so it operates as a 1000BASE-SX transceiver at 1.25 Gbps when the switch port is configured for 1G/10G rate-select. This makes it useful during phased upgrades, where the same hardware covers 1G access and 10G aggregation. Not every SFP+ port supports rate-select; verify against the switch platform's port capability matrix before relying on 1G fallback in production.

Does the 10G-SFP-300 support Fibre Channel below 10G FC?

Yes. Supported Fibre Channel rates are 1G (1.0625 Gbps), 2G (2.125 Gbps), 4G (4.25 Gbps), 8G (8.5 Gbps), and 10G (10.52 Gbps), all within the 1.25 to 11.32 Gbps multi-rate envelope. The same module covers FC SAN links from edge access to ISL aggregation. FC reach varies by generation per FC-PI-*: 8GFC OM3 reach is approximately 150 m, 4GFC OM3 reaches approximately 380 m, and lower rates extend further; verify the FC-PI specification for the target FC rate against the plant length. STM-64 SDH at 9.95 Gbps is also in scope. The host FC switch port must be configured for the target FC rate; the module follows the host's rate negotiation.

Will a 10GBASE-SR SFP+ module physically fit in a 1G SFP port?

The module physically inserts into a 1G SFP cage because SFP and SFP+ share the same form factor per SFF-8432. It will not link up: the 1G-only port lacks the 10G electrical interface and the rate-select logic that SFP+ requires. For 1G operation the host port must be an SFP+ port with dual-rate enabled. If the link target is genuinely 1G-only on a 1G SFP cage, use a 1000BASE-SX SFP instead.
