16G FC CWDM SFP+ 40km Transceiver Description
Our EDGEOPTIC CWDM-16GFC-SFP-20 is a multi-vendor compatible 16G Fiber Channel CWDM SFP+ dual-fiber optical module designed for wavelength-division multiplexed storage area network applications operating over single-mode fiber cabling. The CWDM-16GFC-SFP-20 module operates across the full CWDM spectrum from 1270nm to 1610nm, supporting 18 ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM channels with 20nm spacing for both transmission and reception. The module provides multi-rate data support from 4.25 to 14.025 Gbps enabling compatibility with 4G, 8G, 10G, and 16G Fiber Channel protocols. Our 16G FC CWDM SFP+ transceiver utilizes EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser) technology for transmission and PIN photodiode for receiving. The transceiver ensures a 13 dB guaranteed optical link budget, providing robust margin for extended-reach CWDM deployments. Over standard single-mode fiber (SMF OS1/OS2), the transceiver reliably reaches distances up to 40 kilometers, enabling efficient fiber utilization through wavelength multiplexing. However, distance is just an indicative parameter calculated for comfort of identification – eventually we calculate distance taking into account minimal optical budget and average attenuation of optical cabling in industry.
CWDM-16GFC-SFP-20 compatible 16G FC CWDM module is hot-pluggable SFP+ with duplex LC/UPC connectors as an optical interface. The electrical interface conforms to SFF-8431 MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specifications, ensuring compatibility with standard SFP+ host systems supporting multiple vendor equipment platforms. Our 16G FC CWDM SFP+ transceiver can be encoded to be compatible and successfully operate in different 80+ brands of storage and networking equipment. The module incorporates DDM/DOM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) functionality providing real-time information including transmitted and received optical power levels, module temperature, bias current, and supply voltage. This diagnostic data is available via MSA-compatible EEPROM interface and enables proactive monitoring of transceiver operational parameters. The module operates within a 0 to 70°C temperature range, with appropriate thermal considerations for sustained operation in controlled data center environments.
Standards compliance includes Fibre Channel 16GFC Physical Interface specifications (FC-PI-5 Rev 6.00) and ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM grid specifications ensuring full protocol compatibility across 4G, 8G, 10G, and 16G Fiber Channel speeds. The EML laser technology provides superior chromatic dispersion tolerance essential for CWDM applications at high data rates. The optical output power range from -2 to 2 dBm combined with -13 dBm receiver sensitivity delivers reliable performance across all CWDM channels. The wide receiver wavelength bandwidth covering the entire CWDM spectrum (1270-1610nm) ensures compatibility with any CWDM channel assignment. The transceiver achieves multi-vendor interoperability through adherence to industry MSA standards, though equipment with vendor-specific module validation may require custom EEPROM programming for compatibility. Our 16G FC CWDM SFP+ transceiver is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with Class 1 FDA and IEC60825-1 laser safety standards.
Typical applications include fiber capacity expansion in existing SAN infrastructure, metropolitan area storage networks, multi-tenant data center implementations, and disaster recovery site connections requiring multiple logical channels over single fiber pairs. The CWDM capability enables up to 18 independent Fiber Channel links over a single fiber pair, dramatically reducing fiber infrastructure requirements. The multi-rate capability accommodates mixed-speed SAN deployments while maximizing fiber utilization through wavelength division multiplexing. Because our focus is providing top quality service, we perform rigorous quality checks before delivery of our products. As a result, we conduct optical parameter measurements at specified CWDM wavelengths, connector cleanliness tests, and SFP+ transceiver EEPROM memory data validation tests.
