400G OSFP FR4 Transceiver for 2km CWDM4 Single-Mode Links

The 400G-OSFP-2 is a 400GBASE-FR4 transceiver built in the plain OSFP form factor (not OSFP112), covering 400G Ethernet over duplex single-mode fiber at 2 km. It uses a 4-channel CWDM optical design with PAM4 modulation, an EML transmitter and a PIN receiver, and it presents a 400GAUI-8 electrical interface that gearboxes internally to the four optical lanes. 400GBASE-FR4 is standardized in IEEE 802.3cu-2021, Clause 151. This module extends reach beyond the family's 500 m DR4 sibling while sharing the LC/UPC duplex connector type used on the 10 km LR4 sibling, giving network engineers a middle reach option built on the same CWDM4 wavelength plan. Operating range spans 0 to 70°C with DDM, CDR and host FEC support, and the module carries CE, RoHS, Class 1 FDA and IEC 60825-1 laser safety, and OSFP MSA compliance alongside the 100G Lambda MSA that underlies its optical parameters.

400GBASE-FR4 OSFP Optical Module Description

The 400G-OSFP-2 is a 400GBASE-FR4 transceiver in the plain OSFP form factor, not the OSFP112 variant used elsewhere in the 400G OSFP family. It supports a maximum data rate of 425 Gbps and carries 400G Ethernet over duplex single-mode fiber using Double LC/UPC connectors, reaching 2 km. 400GBASE-FR4 is standardized in IEEE 802.3cu-2021 (Amendment 11), Clause 151, a 4-lane, 100 Gbps-per-wavelength CWDM4 PMD, distinct from the older 8-lane 400GBASE-FR8 defined in 802.3bs.

Each of the four CWDM wavelengths (1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm) carries 100 Gbps of PAM4 traffic, driven by an EML transmitter and received by a PIN photodiode. Average launch power per lane runs −3.3 to 4 dBm with a 3.5 dB minimum extinction ratio; average receiver sensitivity per lane runs −7.3 to 4 dBm with a 5 dBm overload point. Link budget is 4 dB average and 4.7 dB minimum (OMA). DDM, CDR and host side FEC are supported. The module presents a 400GAUI-8 electrical interface (8x53.125G PAM4) that gearboxes internally to the four optical CWDM lanes, distinct from the native 400GAUI-4 interface used on EDGE's OSFP112-class 400G modules.

This FR4 module sits between the family's DR4 module at 500 m and LR4 module at 10 km, using the same CWDM4 wavelength plan as LR4 rather than DR4's parallel single wavelength design. FR4 shares LR4's duplex LC/UPC connector. DR4 instead uses MPO/APC parallel fiber and is not interchangeable with this module.

The module operates from 0 to 70°C, stores from −40° to 85°C, and tolerates 5 to 85 percent relative humidity. Power draw is bounded at 12 W on a single 3.3 V supply, with a finned top housing. Certifications include CE, RoHS, Class 1 FDA and IEC 60825-1 laser safety, the 100G Lambda MSA, and the OSFP MSA.

The 400G-OSFP-2 is made to order and carries EDGE Optical Solutions' standard 5-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. For project quantity pricing or platform verification, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standard defines the 400G OSFP FR4, and is it the same as FR8?

400GBASE-FR4 is standardized in IEEE 802.3cu-2021 (Amendment 11), Clause 151, published February 26, 2021. It defines a 4-lane, 100 Gbps-per-wavelength CWDM4 optical interface over duplex single-mode fiber at 2 km. That is a different clause from the older 8-lane 400GBASE-FR8, which is defined in IEEE 802.3bs.

How does the 400G OSFP FR4 differ from the family's DR4 module?

The FR4 module uses Double LC/UPC duplex fiber with four CWDM wavelengths (1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm) over 2 fibers at 2 km. The DR4 module in the same family instead uses MPO/APC parallel fiber with four lanes at the same wavelength over 8 fibers at 500 m. The two modules connect to different fiber plants and are not interchangeable.

Does the 400G OSFP FR4 require host side FEC?

Host-side FEC is supported and expected for this 4-lane, 100 Gbps-per-wavelength PAM4 link class defined for 400GBASE-FR4. Enable host RS-FEC per the platform's optics guidance.
