Aruba compatible R9D18A Description

R9D18A is the Aruba Instant On part number for a 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver. Aruba created a separate SKU line for the Instant On portfolio, so R9D18A should not be confused with J9150A or J9150D, which belong to the enterprise Aruba/HPE CX and ProCurve families. The R9D18A is validated for Instant On 1930 and 1960 series switches. Aruba also references this module in its Instant On documentation as the "HPE Networking Instant On 10G SFP+ LC SR 300m OM3 MMF Transceiver," which is the full catalog description.

Transmission at 850 nm via VCSEL laser with LC/UPC duplex connectors. The optical budget of 6.1 dB per IEEE 802.3ae supports 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4 multimode fiber. DDM readings (optical power, temperature, bias current) are accessible through the Instant On cloud management dashboard.

Rate support covers 1.25 to 10.3125 Gbps: 10 Gigabit Ethernet per IEEE 802.3ae and 1 Gigabit Ethernet depending on the host port capabilities. DDM diagnostics (SFF-8472) report optical power levels, temperature, laser bias, and supply voltage. These readings are accessible through the Instant On cloud management interface when supported by the switch model. Commercial temperature range is 0 to 70 degrees C.

The Instant On 1930 series includes 8-port, 24-port, and 48-port models, each with 2 or 4 SFP+ uplink ports used for 10G aggregation or inter-switch connectivity. The 1960 series adds 10G-capable SFP+ access ports in addition to uplinks. In both cases, the R9D18A plugs into the SFP+ cage and operates at 10GbE over multimode fiber. The module is also accepted by Instant On 1960 stackable configurations where SFP+ ports carry inter-member stacking traffic. CE and RoHS certifications apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the R9D18A the same as the J9150A or J9150D?

No. The R9D18A belongs to the Aruba Instant On product line, while J9150A and J9150D are enterprise Aruba/HPE SKUs for CX, ProCurve, and FlexNetwork switches. All three are 10GBASE-SR SFP+ modules with the same optical specs, but the EEPROM vendor coding differs. Instant On firmware expects the R9D18A PID.

Which Aruba Instant On switches have SFP+ ports for the R9D18A?

The Instant On 1930 series (8-port, 24-port, and 48-port models) includes 2 or 4 SFP+ uplink ports. The Instant On 1960 series has both SFP+ uplink and 10G SFP+ access ports. Both families accept the R9D18A for 10GbE connectivity over multimode fiber.
