8-Channel Single Fiber CWDM Mux/Demux (Side A) Description

The SCMD-8A is a passive CWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer for single-fiber CWDM links, carrying both directions on one strand instead of a fiber pair. This is the Side A unit of an asymmetric system; the counterpart SCMD-8B mounts at the far end. It combines eight channels onto, or splits them off, one LC/UPC fiber.

The SCMD-8A covers 8 CWDM channel pairs, 16 optical channels, and ships in one of two selectable ITU-T G.694.2 wavelength bands chosen at order time: 1271 to 1571nm or 1311 to 1611nm, both on the 20nm CWDM grid, with a passband of plus or minus 6.5nm. Passband insertion loss is 1.8dB, with isolation of 30dB adjacent and 40dB non-adjacent, via compact CWDM (CCWDM) free-space filters.

A built-in 1% monitoring port is fixed on every SCMD-8A regardless of housing, for live optical power or OSNR checks without breaking the primary signal path. Insertion loss through the monitor port is 23dB.

Housing is selected at order time, not fixed to one form factor. Mini-LGX and LGX Types mount in standard LGX-compatible cassette shelves; the 19 inch 1U Type integrates directly onto rack rails. Wavelength band and monitor port are identical across all three, affecting mounting only.

A working single-fiber CWDM link needs one SCMD-8A (Side A) and one SCMD-8B (Side B) at the far end, both ordered in the same wavelength band. Pairing an SCMD-8A ordered in 1271 to 1571nm with an SCMD-8B ordered in 1311 to 1611nm misaligns every channel pair. Each channel port carries one wavelength outbound and a different wavelength inbound; the SCMD-8B mirrors the pair with transmit and receive reversed. Two SCMD-8A units together will not link.

Operating temperature is -5 to 70C with an MTBF of 1,000,000 hours; the unit is CE, ISO, and RoHS compliant. For wavelength band selection, housing options, or project quantity orders, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SCMD-8A need a matching SCMD-8B at the far end of the link?

Yes. The SCMD-8A is one half of an asymmetric single-fiber CWDM pair, so a working link needs both an SCMD-8A (Side A) and an SCMD-8B (Side B), one at each end of the fiber. This is a standard single-fiber CWDM design constraint, not something specific to how the SCMD-8A is built. Running two SCMD-8A units on the same link, or leaving one end without an SCMD-8B, will not establish a working connection.

Which CWDM wavelength band does the SCMD-8A carry, and does it need to match the far end?

SCMD-8A ships in one of two ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM band builds selected at order time: 1271-1571nm or 1311-1611nm. Each build provides 8 CWDM channels, with each channel carried as a wavelength pair (16 wavelengths total spanning the band). The SCMD-8B unit at the far end of the link must be built for the same band, or the channels will not line up correctly.

Does the housing I choose for the SCMD-8A, mini-LGX, LGX, or 19 inch 1U, change its optical performance?

No. All three housing options (mini-LGX, LGX, and 19-inch 1U) share the same optical core, wavelength plan, and passband; they differ in mounting form factor only. Choose the housing to match the mounting infrastructure already in the rack; verify the exact shelf or rail requirements against the datasheet for the form factor you order.

Does the SCMD-8A include a 1310nm window port or an EXP expansion port?

No. Unlike some other CWDM mux/demux units in the EdgeOptic catalog, the SCMD-8A does not offer a 1310nm window port or an EXP expansion port as configurable or fixed options; every build ships without either.
