SCMD-9B-M
Product Overview
The SCMD-9B is the Side B single fiber CWDM mux/demux unit for a 9-channel bidirectional link, pairing with the SCMD-9A at the far end to run nine duplex data streams over one strand of fiber. It multiplexes and demultiplexes the B side of each CWDM channel pair, from 1291 to 1611 nm, through free-space CCWDM filters, with a built-in 1% monitoring port and LC/UPC connectors throughout. Housing ships as mini-LGX, LGX, or 19-inch 1U, with identical optical performance across all three.

9-Channel Single Fiber CWDM Mux/Demux (Side B) Description
The SCMD-9B is the Side B unit of a 9-channel single fiber CWDM mux/demux pair, carrying nine data streams as 18 optical channels over one fiber strand. It multiplexes and demultiplexes the B side of each channel pair: 1291, 1331, 1371, 1411, 1451, 1491, 1531, 1571 and 1611 nm, on alternating slots of the ITU-T G.694.2 20 nm CWDM grid. The companion SCMD-9A carries the corresponding A side at the far end. Both units are required, one on each end of the link, to complete a bidirectional connection.
Each channel passes through free-space CCWDM filters with a passband of plus or minus 6.5 nm. Insertion loss through the passband is 1.9 dB, with adjacent and non-adjacent channel isolation of 30 dB and 40 dB. Polarization dependent loss is 0.2 dB, polarization mode dispersion is 0.1 ps, directivity is 50 dB and return loss is 45 dB. Input power is rated up to 500 mW, operating temperature is -5 to 70 degrees C, and MTBF is rated at 1,000,000 hours. The unit complies with CE, ISO and RoHS requirements.
A 1% monitoring port is built into the unit, tapping a small fraction of the multiplexed signal for optical power measurement without breaking the live link. Insertion loss at the monitor port is 23 dB. The monitor port is fixed on every SCMD-9B configuration and is not affected by the housing selection.
SCMD-9B ships in three housing options: mini-LGX, LGX, or 19-inch 1U rack mount. The housing determines how the unit mounts into existing patch panel infrastructure. The optical path, wavelength plan, and monitor port are identical across all three options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can housing be mixed across the SCMD-9A and SCMD-9B pair, for example a mini-LGX SCMD-9A with an LGX SCMD-9B?
Yes. Housing is a mounting choice only, it does not change the optical path. Each end of the link picks its housing independently, so a mini-LGX unit at one end works with an LGX or 19-inch 1U unit at the other. The link only requires one Side A unit and one Side B unit, regardless of which housing option each one uses.
If one end of the link already has an SCMD-9A, does the far end need an SCMD-9B or another SCMD-9A?
The far end needs an SCMD-9B. Two units on the same side will not link to each other because they carry the same set of wavelengths. A working link always pairs one Side A unit with one Side B unit, one at each end of the fiber.
Which wavelengths does SCMD-9B carry, and how does that differ from SCMD-9A?
SCMD-9B multiplexes and demultiplexes the B side of each CWDM channel pair: 1291, 1331, 1371, 1411, 1451, 1491, 1531, 1571 and 1611 nm. SCMD-9A carries the corresponding A side of each pair: 1271, 1311, 1351, 1391, 1431, 1471, 1511, 1551 and 1591 nm. SCMD-9B is the far-end unit in the pair, installed opposite an SCMD-9A rather than alongside another SCMD-9B.
Which transceivers pair with SCMD-9B?
SCMD-9B needs CWDM-tuned transceivers whose transmit wavelength matches one of its nine channels (1291, 1331, 1371, 1411, 1451, 1491, 1531, 1571 or 1611 nm), one transceiver per data stream. CWDM channel grids and labeling vary between transceiver manufacturers, so verify the exact center wavelength against the transceiver's own datasheet before ordering.
