Brocade compatible 10G-SFPP-USR Description

Brocade 10G-SFPP-USR is an Ultra Short Reach 10GbE SFP+ scoped to in-rack server-to-ToR and short inter-rack links on Brocade VDX data-center switches, MLXe core routers and ICX campus stacks. The module is electrically compliant with IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 at 10.3125 Gbps, uses an 850 nm VCSEL and an 850 nm PIN receiver, and terminates duplex LC multimode fiber at the same mechanical envelope as a full 10GBASE-SR SFP+. USR is not the full 10GBASE-SR specification: Brocade's datasheet caps the guaranteed reach at 100 m OM3, with a reduced TX power envelope suited to short fiber runs rather than the full 300 m OM3 budget, and the receiver sensitivity window is trimmed in line with that shorter reach. The USR variant is positioned as a lower-cost option for top-of-rack patching where the physical distance is measured in tens of meters rather than hundreds. For a 300 m OM3 span, use the full-reach 10GBASE-SR part (10G-SFPP-SR) instead of this USR variant.

SFF-8472 DDM/DOM is supported for live TX power, RX power, bias, voltage and temperature readouts over I2C. EdgeOptic programs the EEPROM with Brocade B-series coding so Brocade NOS on VDX, IronWare on MLXe and FastIron on ICX recognize the module as a native 10G-SFPP-USR and do not raise a third-party-optic warning. Brocade's networking business went to Broadcom in 2017, with ICX transferred to Ruckus (later CommScope) and the VDX/MLXe lines passing to Extreme Networks; current Extreme EXOS/SLX and CommScope/Ruckus FastIron releases retain the vendor-ID accept-list for this part. The module operates from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius, complies with SFP+ MSA SFF-8431/8432 and is CE/RoHS certified. The 100 m OM3 ceiling is a design choice for in-rack and adjacent-rack short-reach cabling, not a fiber-quality limit — OM3 plant that runs longer spans still works, but a full-SR module should be used for those spans to keep link margin inside the 802.3ae Clause 52 envelope.

If the target span exceeds 100 m OM3 or spans VDX/MLXe plus ICX on the same link, contact our sales team for guidance on picking 10G-SFPP-USR versus 10G-SFPP-SR per fiber plant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the USR reach 100 m OM3 and not 300 m like a standard SR?

Ultra Short Reach is Brocade's short-span variant of 10G SFP+ with a reduced TX power envelope targeted at in-rack server-to-ToR links. The Brocade datasheet guarantees 100 m OM3 rather than the 300 m OM3 budget of the full 10GBASE-SR part. This trades reach for lower BOM cost on short runs where 100 m is sufficient.

Can 10G-SFPP-USR interoperate with a full 10G-SFPP-SR on the other side?

They are both 850 nm MMF 10G optics, so a link will often come up if the fiber span is inside the USR side's 100 m OM3 budget and the receiver power falls within both parts' RX window. However, Brocade documents this pair as a non-guaranteed configuration; for a supported link design, match USR-to-USR for sub-100 m spans or SR-to-SR for longer runs.

Which platforms still recognize 10G-SFPP-USR after Brocade's split?

Extreme Networks EXOS/SLX for the ex-Brocade VDX and MLXe lines, and CommScope/Ruckus FastIron for the ICX stackable family. Current firmware on both tracks keeps the 10G-SFPP-USR vendor ID on the accept-list, so the module registers as a native Brocade part on supported ports.
