Brocade compatible 10G-SFPP-USR-SA Description

EdgeOptic's 10G-SFP-300 compatible is a Brocade-coded 10G USR (Ultra Short Reach) SFP+ that replaces the 10G-SFPP-USR-SA. USR is a vendor-specific designation, not an IEEE 802.3 standard. It targets short intra-rack connections on Brocade ICX campus and data centre switches. The SA suffix identifies the firmware acceptance variant for the ICX platform family. Brocade was acquired by Broadcom in 2017, and the ICX campus networking business was subsequently divested to Ruckus (CommScope). Despite the ownership changes, the ICX firmware still validates optics against Brocade-era vendor OUI codes. EdgeOptic programs the EEPROM with Brocade-recognized vendor data, so ICX switches accept the module without vendor-mismatch warnings. Optical parameters: 850 nm VCSEL transmitter, PIN photodiode receiver, 10.3125 Gbps line rate. USR reach is 100 m over OM3 and 150 m over OM4 multimode fibre, with a power budget per vendor datasheet.

USR modules differ from standard 10GBASE-SR in both reach and power budget. SR modules follow IEEE 802.3ae and reach 300 m OM3 / 400 m OM4. USR modules use a relaxed power budget that lowers power consumption in high-density deployments where link distances stay within a single rack row or adjacent racks. Do not deploy a USR optic on spans exceeding 100 m on OM3 or 150 m on OM4. Verify the fibre path length during commissioning and select an SR-coded module if any span exceeds these limits. The 10G-SFPP-USR-SA and 10G-SFPP-USR-SA8 differ only in their firmware acceptance code: SA targets one ICX firmware branch and SA8 targets another. Verify the firmware branch running on the ICX switch before ordering. DDM/DOM telemetry provides TX power, RX power, temperature, bias current, and supply voltage monitoring. The 10G-SFP-300 chipset supports multi-rate operation from 1.25 to 11.32 Gbps. LC duplex connector, 0 to 70 C operating range.

Every 10G-SFPP-USR-SA compatible is tested against current ICX firmware releases and validated against Brocade vendor OUI requirements. Quality checks include optical power measurement, connector inspection, and EEPROM data verification. The module is CE/RoHS certified and compliant with SFP+ MSA (SFF-8431/SFF-8432). Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 10G-SFPP-USR-SA and 10G-SFPP-USR-SA8?

The optical hardware and specifications are identical. The SA and SA8 suffixes refer to different firmware acceptance codes for different ICX firmware branches. Check the firmware version running on the ICX switch to determine which suffix is required. Installing the wrong variant may trigger a vendor validation warning.

Is USR reach really 100 m, not 300 m like standard SR?

Correct. USR (Ultra Short Reach) is rated for 100 m over OM3 and 150 m over OM4. Standard 10GBASE-SR reaches 300 m OM3 / 400 m OM4 per IEEE 802.3ae. USR trades distance for a lower power budget, targeting short intra-rack links. If the span exceeds 100 m on OM3, use an SR-coded module instead.
