Chelsio compatible SM10G-SR Description

SM10G-SR is a Chelsio-coded 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver for Chelsio Unified Wire adapters in the Terminator 5 and Terminator 6 generations: T520-CR, T520-LL-CR, T520-SO-CR, T540-CR, T580-CR and T520-BT. The EdgeOptic compatible is programmed with the Chelsio-recognized vendor ID block, so the adapter firmware accepts the optic under the default Unified Wire configuration and the host sees the module in cxgb4 driver logs with the expected Chelsio attribution. Chelsio Unified Wire silicon is used in HPC and storage-server builds that rely on the adapter's iSCSI, iWARP RDMA, NVMe-oF and FCoE offload stack. On the dual-personality T520-BT, SM10G-SR seats in the SFP+ cage, which operates independently of the adapter's 10GBASE-T copper port.

Protocol is IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 10GBASE-SR at 10.3125 Gbps. Optical build uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter, 850 nm PIN photodiode receiver, 6.1 dB minimum link budget, duplex LC connector and SFP+ MSA (SFF-8432) mechanical envelope. Reach is 300 m over OM3 and 400 m over OM4 with fully characterized multimode fiber, with 82 m over OM2 and 33 m over OM1 for legacy plant. SFF-8472 DDM/DOM exposes Tx power, Rx power, laser bias, temperature and supply voltage to the host, readable from the Chelsio t4_tools utility and from ethtool -m on Linux cxgb4 interfaces. Commercial operating range is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.

Typical deployment is storage-server offload workloads: iSCSI initiator and target hosts running Chelsio's TOE stack, iWARP-based RDMA clusters for HPC and database replication, and NVMe-oF and FCoE nodes that use Chelsio's line-rate offload path to reduce host CPU load. The SM10G-SR optic lands in the SFP+ cages on T520-CR and T540-CR dual-port adapters, and also in the 10G cages on T580-CR quad-port and T520-BT combined copper/fiber adapters. On the switch side, the attached top-of-rack still runs its own vendor-ID check, so the switch port uses a separately coded SR SFP+ that matches the switch vendor's EEPROM allow list.
