Cisco compatible QSFP-100G-ZR4-S Description

EdgeOptic's QSFP-100G-ZR4-S compatible is a Cisco-coded 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28 transceiver for 100Gb/s Ethernet over 80 km of duplex single-mode fiber. The standard is MSA-extended from IEEE 802.3ba LR4: same 4x25G NRZ direct-detection scheme over a 4-channel LAN-WDM grid, with the link budget pushed to 30 dB to reach 80 km on G.652 SMF.

The four LAN-WDM channels sit at 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58 and 1309.14 nm and are multiplexed into a single LC duplex pair. EML transmitters at +2.0 to +6.5 dBm per lane average launch power deliver the headroom for the long reach; SOA+PIN receivers with -28 dBm/lane minimum sensitivity recover the signal at the far end. Receiver overload is -5.5 dBm/lane. Power draw is 5.5 W max at 3.3 V per Cisco's QSFP-100G-ZR4-S spec, commercial 0 to 70 °C operating range.

EdgeOptic codes our Cisco-compatible optics with Cisco-recognized EEPROM, so the QSFP-100G-ZR4-S compatible plugs into NX-OS, IOS XE and IOS XR platforms without the 'service unsupported-transceiver' command. RS-FEC (RS-528,514) is required at the host port on both ends of the link; ZR4 will not interoperate with a standard 100GBASE-LR4 endpoint, since LR4 does not enable FEC by default. For short links, a minimum of about 11 dB attenuation between two ZR4 endpoints is recommended to keep the receiver below its overload threshold.

Per Cisco's Transceiver Module Compatibility (TMG) matrix, QSFP-100G-ZR4-S is supported across a broad spread of Cisco platforms: Nexus 9000 (N9200, N9300, N9500 and N9800 line-card systems), ASR 9000 with the A9K-8HG-FLEX, A9K-20HG-FLEX, A99-32X100GE-X, ASR-9901, ASR-9902 and ASR-9903 line cards, NCS 540 and NCS 560 series, NCS 5500 with NC55-24X100G-SE, NC55-36X100G-A-SE and NC57 line cards, Catalyst 9500X-28C8D and 9500X-60L4D, Catalyst 9600 with the C9600X-SUP-2 supervisor, and Cisco 8201/8202 routers. Minimum IOS trains span NX-OS 10.3(3)F to 10.4(2)F (Nexus 9000 family, by line card), IOS XR 7.6.1 to 7.11.1 (ASR 9000 / NCS 540 / NCS 560 / NCS 5500 / Cisco 8000 family, by line card), and IOS XE 17.12.1 to 17.13.1 (Catalyst 9500X / 9600). Several line cards cap the number of ZR4-S modules per slot or restrict ZR4-S to specific port positions; verify the exact IOS minimum, line-card eligibility and per-slot port count against the TMG entry for your chassis before deploying.

DOM data (per-lane Tx power, Rx power, laser bias, temperature) is exposed via the standard SFF-8636 management interface, accessible through each platform's standard transceiver and optics diagnostic commands on NX-OS, IOS XE and IOS XR. Compliance covers CE, RoHS, Class 1 FDA / IEC 60825-1 laser safety, QSFP28 MSA, SFF-8636 and SFF-8665.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cisco QSFP-100G-ZR4-S

Which Cisco platforms support the QSFP-100G-ZR4-S?

Per the Cisco Transceiver Module Compatibility (TMG) matrix, QSFP-100G-ZR4-S covers Nexus 9000 (N9200, N9300, N9500 and N9800 line-card systems), ASR 9000 with A9K-8HG-FLEX / A9K-20HG-FLEX / A99-32X100GE-X / ASR-9901 / ASR-9902 / ASR-9903, NCS 540 and NCS 560 series, NCS 5500 with NC55-24X100G-SE / NC55-36X100G-A-SE / NC57 line cards, Catalyst 9500X-28C8D and 9500X-60L4D, Catalyst 9600 with C9600X-SUP-2, and Cisco 8201/8202. IOS train minimums span NX-OS 10.3(3)F to 10.4(2)F, IOS XR 7.6.1 to 7.11.1 and IOS XE 17.12.1 to 17.13.1 depending on the line card. Some line cards cap ZR4-S modules per slot. Verify the exact minimum and port count against the TMG entry for your chassis.

What does the '-S' suffix mean on QSFP-100G-ZR4-S?

QSFP-100G-ZR4-S is the standard commercial Cisco ordering PID for the 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28. The '-S' is part of the part number Cisco lists in its own product collateral for separate-orderable transceivers. Cisco also offers an alternate PID (Q100-ZR4-S-EA) for the same module. Verify the exact PID expected by your purchasing channel before placing the order.

Do I need 'service unsupported-transceiver' to bring up the QSFP-100G-ZR4-S compatible on NX-OS or IOS XE?

No. EdgeOptic's QSFP-100G-ZR4-S compatible is coded with Cisco-recognized EEPROM, so the module enumerates as a supported Cisco transceiver on NX-OS, IOS XE and IOS XR. The 'service unsupported-transceiver' command is not required for the module to come up, and DOM data reads through each platform's standard transceiver / optics diagnostic command.
