The CFP2-DCO MSA is a pluggable digital coherent C form-factor optical transceiver designed for high-speed optical networking applications: Telecom Metro/Long-haul, Wireless Backhaul, and Hyperscale Data Center Interconnect (DCI). The letter C in the CFP2 naming is an acronym for 100G (C = 100 in Roman numerals; Centum), since the standard was originally developed around 100G systems; the same CFP2 electrical and mechanical interface has since scaled to 200G and 400G-capable coherent modules. CFP2 is a second-generation form factor, an evolution from the CFP form factor (CFP2 is roughly half the size of CFP: 106 mm x 41.5 mm x 12.4 mm); the CFP MSA family also includes the smaller CFP4 and the higher-capacity CFP8 form factors. Because the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) sits on the module itself instead of on the transponder line card, CFP2-DCO modules help simplify the IP routing edge by giving switches and routers the ability to transport IP directly over a DWDM network (IPoDWDM), merging the packet and optical layers on a single platform and supporting a pay-as-you-grow capacity model.

200G Coherent CFP2 DCO

EDGE's 100G/200G-rate CFP2-DCO modules transmit dual-rate 100G/200G line-side signal over a single wavelength using a C-band tunable laser on the ITU-T DWDM 50 GHz grid (C-band, 1528 to 1568 nm), with DP-16QAM modulation on the coherent line side. These modules reach up to 2000 km (100G OTU4 signal) or 1000 km (200G OTUC2 signal) with amplification over G.652 single-mode fiber (SMF), and up to 80 km in native (unamplified) mode. Each module integrates a coherent DSP ASIC with third-generation SD-FEC (Soft Decision Forward Error Correction) offloaded to the DSP for long-haul, error-free transmission, and draws up to 24W of power. On the line side, 100G/200G CFP2-DCO modules use dual LC connectors; on the host side, a 104-pin CFP2 MSA-compliant connector.

400G-rate CFP2-DCO modules extend the same MSA form factor to higher line-side capacity. These are a separate module class from the 100G/200G-rate modules described above, supporting 200G/400G dual-rate operation over the OIF 400ZR, OpenZR+, or OpenROADM interoperability profiles. Client-side mapping scales to 400GbE and OTUCn framing alongside 200GbE. Reach, modulation format, and power consumption for 400G-rate modules vary by implementation; consult the specific module's datasheet for the exact figures at that line rate.
